BOARDMAN -- It's about pride.
The second township cleanup, called Boardman Takes Pride, begins with a 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. community day and recycling open house Saturday at the government center, Market Street.
"It's really an awareness and educational event, to make residents aware of the services the township has to offer and the services of other entities," said Trustee Robyn Gallitto.
The event keeps the spirit of Earth Day, which is Sunday.
Mahoning County commissioners and representatives from the county's reuse and recycling division are expected to attend.
As part of the day's drop-and-go feature, residents can bring usable household items they no longer want to the government center.
All donated items will go to Goodwill and the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley.
Educational displays from the township park, Eastgate Regional Council of Governments and the county health department will be featured.
A coloring contest for children ages pre-kindergarten through fourth grade also is part of the activities.
Kids can color in the recycling-theme picture, available on the township's Web site, www.boardmantwp.com, and submit it the day of the event. Winners will receive prizes or gift certificates.
"I think every community should have these," said Trustee Kathy Miller.
Other plans
An electronics drive continues the earth-friendly theme from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 28 at the government center. The event is open to Mahoning County residents and small businesses and each person is limited to five electronics to drop off for recycling.
Acceptable items include computers, monitors, printers, cell phones, DVD and VCR units and table-top copiers and fax machines.
No keyboards or mice will be accepted. There is a 5 fee for televisions.
Beginning at 10 a.m. May 7, the township, Ohio Department of Transportation District 4, the county and Youngstown Street Department will send their street sweepers out to clean major corridors in the community.
A tire recycling drive is set for Aug. 3 at National Tire Warehouse, Route 224 and South Avenue.
