KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jorge De La Rosa and Todd Wellemeyer combined on a shutout and Mike Mussina was hit hard in his return from a groin injury. Emil Brown homered for the Royals, who wasted a 5-1, eighth-inning lead in a 12-5 loss in Monday's series opener. Derek Jeter was 1-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 16 games and leaving his average at .343, two points behind Minnesota's Joe Mauer, who leads the AL. New York was 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Mussina (13-6), pitching for the first time since Aug. 20, gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings. He left after Brown's leadoff homer in the sixth put the Royals ahead 4-0, and lost for just the second time in 10 decisions at Kansas City. De La Rosa (2-2) got his second victory in 15 major league starts, leaving after 52/3 innings with a blister on the middle finger of his left hand. He gave up six hits, struck out four and walked two.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Johan Santana became the first 17-game winner in the major leagues, allowing two hits over eight scoreless innings. Santana (17-5) struck out 12 and walked one. The left-hander, 8-0 since the All-Star break, retired his first 10 hitters before Delmon Young doubled with one out in the fourth. He then got eight straight outs before Young singled to lead off the seventh. The only other batter to reach base against Santana was B.J. Upton, who drew a two-out walk in the eighth. Jason Tyner had an RBI double and Jason Bartlett hit a sacrifice fly off Jae Seo (1-6) during a three-run fourth that put the Twins ahead 3-0. Michael Cuddyer hit an RBI double and Justin Morneau had a run-scoring triple in a three-run seventh to make it 6-0.
Red Sox 1, White Sox 0
BOSTON -- David Ortiz returned to the Red Sox lineup, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a walk. Ortiz had not played in eight days and was hospitalized for two days last week because of heart palpitations. Kason Gabbard earn his first major league victory with seven innings of three-hit ball. Gabbard (1-3) allowed two walks and struck out six. Mike Timlin pitched two innings for his fourth save, his second since closer Jonathan Papelbon went out with a tired right shoulder. Javier Vazquez (11-9) pitched a three-hitter, struck out 11 and retired his last 13 batters. He is winless in five starts. Boston scored when Trot Nixon doubled with one out in the fourth and came home on Coco Crisp's single.
Mariners 4, Tigers 3
DETROIT -- Joel Pineiro came on after a long rain delay and worked 32/3 innings of perfect relief. The win was just Seattle's second in 16 road games. Detroit has lost nine of 13, and leads Minnesota by only four games in the AL Central. The Tigers had a 10-game edge in the division on Aug. 8. Pineiro (8-11) retired all 11 batters he faced when he entered the 3-3 game to start the fifth inning after an 1 hour, 23-minute rain delay. He struck out four.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Reds 3, Giants 0
CINCINNATI -- Bronson Arroyo pitched his first career shutout and Rich Aurilia and Todd Hollandsworth had three hits apiece for Cincinnati. Pitching on three days of rest, Arroyo (12-9) allowed only three singles to turn Cincinnati around after a 2-8 West Coast trip. He struck out seven and walked one. The Giants couldn't overcome a wild first inning by Matt Morris (10-12), whose first eight pitches were out of the strike zone, spotting the Reds a pair of runners. Cincinnati then scored on Aurilia's broken-bat single, Edwin Encarnacion's sacrifice fly and Todd Hollandworth's double. Barry Bonds went 0-for-3 with a walk, ending his streak of three straight games with a homer. Ken Griffey Jr. was out of Cincinnati's lineup, a day after dislocated a toe on his right foot while trying to catch Bonds' 730th career homer.

WASHINGTON -- Albert Pujols hit his fifth home run in three days and Jeff Suppan took a shutout into the eighth inning to lead St. Louis. Pujols pulled a flat, 76-mph pitch from Pedro Astacio over the left field fence in the first inning for his 44th homer, a solo shot. Suppan (11-7) made it stand up over 72/3 innings, his second scoreless outing in three starts. He allowed five hits, struck out five and walked two. Jason Isringhausen pitched the ninth for his 33rd save in 42 opportunities. Astacio (3-5) took the loss despite pitching well after three bad outings. He allowed two runs and six hits over 61/3 innings and didn't walk a batter, his best performance since throwing a shutout against Atlanta on Aug. 15.
Diamondbacks 4, Marlins 0
MIAMI -- Dontrelle Willis lost for the first time in four starts, giving up home runs to Carlos Quinten and Damion Easley before leaving in the seventh inning. Florida lost for just the third time in 16 games and dropped back to .500 at 69-69. The Marlins, 11-31 on May 21, beat the Diamondbacks on Monday to become the first team in major league history to climb above .500 after being 20 games under. Marlins manager Joe Girardi made it to the ballpark a few hours after his wife gave birth to the couple's third child, a daughter named Lenayvonne. Willis (9-11) left the game after a trainer came to the mound in the seventh; it was not immediately known whether he was hurt. Claudio Vargas (11-9) struck out six in seven innings, giving up four hits while walking two.

MILWAUKEE -- Los Angeles lost its third straight following a seven-game winning streak asDoug Davis pitched a four-hitter and Corey Hart drove in a career-high six runs. Davis (10-9) struck out eight, walked one and retired his final 16 batters in his third career shutout, his first since a seven-hitter at Minnesota on May 21, 2005. He had lost his three previous starts since beating Pittsburgh on Aug. 15.
