Cortland: City council

City council took the following actions Tuesday:
Moved to a second reading an ordinance giving the mayor authority to enter into an agreement with CT Consultants Inc. of Youngstown for $14,700 to perform traffic studies at High and Main streets and High and Mecca Avenue. Service Director Don Whitman said the study will include looking at turning movements, traffic counts and flow. The Federal Highway Administration will pay for either 80 percent or 100 percent of any upgrades, depending on what is done to improve the flow of traffic.
Moved to a second reading legislation to increase the salaries of Police Chief Gary Mink and Fire Chief Bill Novakovich from $47,358 annually to $49,016. Legislation had been introduced in July for the city to pay Mink and Novakovich cash so they could personally pay into the Public Employees Retirement System. This would have increased their retirement payments by $200 per month, but was defeated by council.
