Amendola has three scores for Boardman

BOARDMAN -- Tyler Amendola scored three touchdowns Saturday as the Boardman High football team defeated Washington (D.C.) Roosevelt, 49-0, at Boardman Stadium. Amendola's 24-yard run and Eric Johnson's extra-point kick put the Spartans ahead in the first quarter. He also scored on a 6-yard run in the second quarter and returned the second-half kickoff 75 yards for a 35-0 lead. Mike Popio scored on a 4-yard run and threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Nick Demarinis. Cameron Shaffer (4-yard run) and Damian Jarrett (3-yard run) also scored for the Spartans (1-1), who held Roosevelt to 58 total yards. It was the second victory for Boardman coach D.J. Ogilvie in his three seasons as head coach of the Spartans, who narrowly lost to Cleveland St. Ignatius in the opener, 8-6. Ogilvie's Spartans also defeated Uniontown Lake last season. Boardman was originally scheduled to play Canfield last weekend, but the Cardinals bought out the contract, prompting the Spartans to find the D.C. replacement.
