Center John Wheaton signed to 1-year deal
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown SteelHounds signed center John Wheaton to a one-year deal for the 2006-07 season.
"John is coming off an outstanding rookie season in the Elite League in Great Britain," said SteelHounds general manager Joe Gregory.
Wheaton, 22, played with the Basingstoke Bison. He was fifth on the team with 29 points and 15 goals and led the team with 56 games played.
He is a native of Cambridge, Ontario.

PITTSBURGH -- Junior middleweight boxer Kiez Smith of Boardman defeated Dave Falcone of Pittsburgh with a second-round knockout Thursday at Saddlefield.
Smith (7-2, 2 KOs) fights for Buckeye Elks and is trained by John Hobart and Nick Marsh. Falcone is 5-4.

*NORTON, Mass. -- Tiger Woods got up-and-down from 90 feet for a birdie on the par-5 18th hole Friday, giving him a 5-under 66 and a one-shot lead in the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship. It was the 10th time in his last 16 rounds he has been atop the leaderboard.
Aaron Baddeley, playing in the same group as Woods, stayed with him most of the day until having to lay up on the 18th. He made par for a 67, joining Bob May, Justin Rose, Joe Ogilvie and Australian rookie Nathan Green.
