DANVILLE, VA. -- Mount Union began defense of its eighth national championship with an offense that rolled up 603 total yards. The Purple Raiders have won eight of the last 13 titles. Quarterback Mike Jorris completed 16-of-18 passes for 276 yards and touchdown passes of 11, 36, 13 and 11 yards to Tom Morring, Pierre Garcon, Brandon Boehm and Nate Kmic respectively, all in the first half, for a 42-7 lead. "We have a veteran squad coming back offensively," Jorris said. "With the playmakers we have, we were able to get a good flow going and execute." Jorris found Garcon for a 73-yard scoring aerial early in the second half. "We played well offensively overall -- the score indicates that," Mt. Union coach Larry Kehres said, "Defensively, we are seeing we have some talented, young players who can make an impact once they gain more experience."
Walsh 42, W. Liberty St. 16
NORTH CANTON -- Antwain Reine ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Rob Lash ran a punt back 75 yards to lead Walsh (1-0). Reine broke loose for a 40-yard run, part of a three-play, 60-yard drive. He ran 6 yards for the game's first score. Lash followed a few minutes later with his touchdown. West Liberty's Billy Hager made a 23-yard field goal, but Sam Caretta and Reine added short scoring runs to put the Cavaliers up 28-3 at the half. After a fumble gave the Hilltoppers (0-1) the ball at the 6-yard line early in the second half, Jake Myers scored from a yard out. Then Jeff Tallman scored on a 24-yard run and Duane Porter intercepted a pass for another touchdown, and Walsh led 42-10
Carnegie Mellon 27, Hiram 6
HIRAM -- Robert Gimson rushed for two touchdowns and Travis Sivek added another to lead Carnegie Mellon. Gimson, who carried 11 times for 43 yards, scored twice in the fourth quarter on 5-yard runs. Sivek had 104 yards rushing on 22 carries and scored on a 1-yard run that put Carnegie Mellon (1-0) up 10-0 at halftime. Hiram (0-1) scored on Trevor Henderson's 25-yard run in the third. He completed 9-of-20 passes for 69 yards and rushed for 52. Nat Greenstein kicked field goals of 25 and 27 yards for Carnegie Mellon. Kevin Mulkern was 6-of-11 passing for 87 yards.
Malone 25, Trinity 7
CANTON -- Bernard Payton rushed for three touchdowns to propel Malone. Payton had 91 yards rushing on 25 carries. He scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter, then added two touchdowns in the fourth on runs of 1 and 2 yards. Malone (1-0) held Trinity (0-1) scoreless until Ryan Thorson hit David Grant on a 54-yard TD pass with 2:18 remaining. Thorson was 12-of-20 passing for 147 yards and was sacked twice. Malone's Brad Reifsnyder completed 17-of-20 passes for 205 yards and threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Derek Deardorff in the third quarter. He was sacked five times.
