NOTEBOOK | YSU vs. Slippery Rock

Poor Jon: YSU coach Jon Heacock told his offense when it came off the field with just under seven minutes to play and leading 51-21 that he didn't want to run another play that could score. So with 4:32 left in the game the offense came back on and quarterback Mike Schneider took three knees and punted. Apparently Dr. George Mihalik and his Slippery Rock staff were insulted by the jester and Heacock publicly apologized in the postgame press conference.
Scoring mark: The 51 points by the Penguins was the most ever scored in a season-opening game. The old record was 50 against Clarion in 1998. It also marked the 19th time that a YSU team has scored over 50 points in a game.
Big plays: Junior quarterback Tom Zetts, a Boardman native, said that big plays were the difference in the game. "We made the big plays tonight," he said. "We drove the ball very well, but we still have no choice but to get better from here out. Senior tailback Marcus Mason, who scored three TDs and rushed for over 100 yards, said the offensive line was the reason. "It didn't matter who was in the game the offensive line blocked the same for everybody."
