McDONALD -- The McDonald Board of Education has established the Marie Burkey Krupko Memorial Scholarship in honor of the Dr. Marie Krupko, who died earlier this month.
She and her husband, Dr. Paul Krupko, operated a family practice in McDonald for decades, and she served on the board of education for many years. Dr. Paul Krupko is also deceased. Donations to the fund are coming in from all over the country, treasurer Thomas Radabaugh said Monday. Guidelines for the scholarship fund will be set by the family.
Libraries will acceptfood donations for fines
WARREN -- During November, six libraries in Trumbull County will accept food donations to pay for fines.
Bristol Public Library, Girard Free Library, Hubbard Public Library, Kinsman Free Public Library, McKinley Memorial Library, and Newton Falls Public Library will allow patrons to donate two items at the circulation desk to have all fines waived.
Only nonperishable items will be accepted, and all items must be in a package.
Items not accepted are: glass containers, opened or expired items, alcoholic beverages, canned or bottled beverages, candy, or U.S. government food products. Food will not be accepted for lost and/or damaged library materials.
Patriot Act discussion
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jeff Gamso, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, will discuss "The Real Effects of Ohio's Patriot Act" at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Jones Room of Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.
The program is free and open to the public. The bill was passed by the Ohio General Assembly in December 2005.
Big Reach need donations
YOUNGSTOWN -- Big Reach provides new toys and pajamas to needy children in Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull counties at Christmastime.
Donations of toys and pajamas can be dropped off at Home Savings branches in the area through Nov. 25.
This year, the goal is to provide one or two new toys (total value of 25) and a new pair of pajamas to more than 1,300 area children; families with or without children will also receive Christmas groceries through Big Reach's efforts, said Scott Lewis, Big Reach co-ordinator.
Ipe playground safer
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city recently installed a rubber surfacing under the playground deck system at Ipe Kids World on East Midlothian Boulevard.
The city received a 2,322 grant from the Mahoning County Solid Waste Management District's 2006 Recycling Initiative for the rubber material, which is made from recycled tires.
Clean Ohio Trail grant
COLUMBUS -- State Rep. Randy Law of Warren, R-64th, said the State Controlling Board has approved a 100,000 grant to the Trumbull County commissioners as part of the Clean Ohio Trail Fund Grant Program.
The money will be used for survey work, design, environmental review, preparation of lease agreements, and engineering and drawings for a 10-foot-wide asphalt stretch of the Western Reserve Greenway Trail in the county near North River Road.
Pray the Vote rally
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bernard Monroe Ministries will sponsor a Pray the Vote rally at 10 a.m. Sunday on the steps of Mahoning County Courthouse, Market Street. The rally will promote the inclusion of God in voting decisions.
Collection for the needy
YOUNGSTOWN -- Women's Outreach Group of the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, will collect items through Dec. 15 for donation to needy families in the area.
Personal hygiene products, household cleaning supplies, new socks and underwear, and new white twin sheets and pillowcases, can be placed in bins at the center's front desk and preschool located at Akiva Academy.

Grant for bridge work
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The city has received a 350,000 state grant to make improvements to the East Washington Street Bridge.
The grant, awarded through Pennsylvania's Growing Greener program, is to be used for cosmetic improvements, including new lighting. City officials said they expect the work to begin next spring.
