NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Roughly 30 cartons of cigarettes were stolen during a break-in at the McQuaid's gas station on Main Street around 1:30 a.m. Monday, police said. The front window was broken out. Police have a surveillance tape of the break-in and a possible suspect in mind who has been involved in similar crimes in the Ellsworth area. Thursday morning, two McQuaid's employees told police they were restrained with duct tape by two gunmen who robbed the store of cash and cigarettes.
Man dies in custody
SHARON, Pa. -- A Hermitage man died after being taken into custody by Sharon police. Richard A. Powell, 61, of Cohasset Drive was stopped at 11:30 p.m. Saturday on a traffic violation, and officers found he was wanted on a warrant.
Police said Powell told them he was suffering from a heart attack, and an ambulance was called to take him to UPMC Farrell, where he later died. Pennsylvania State Police and the Mercer County District Attorney's office are investigating.
Moonda waives right
AKRON -- A Mercer County woman accused in the death of her urologist husband has waived her right to a speedy trial. Donna Moonda, 47, of Hermitage Pa., submitted papers to U.S. District Court here last week stating the case is legally complex and requires much investigation. Her attorneys believe that work cannot be done in the standard 70 days given between indictment and trial under normal circumstances. Moonda is accused of plotting the death of her husband, Dr. Gulam Moonda, with Damian Bradford, 25. Dr. Moonda was shot on the side of the Ohio Turnpike on May 13, 2005.
Fire in family home
STRUTHERS -- Karen Warren and her 10-year-old daughter, Jennifer Paddy, escaped without injury from a Monday fire in their home at 25 McClure St. The fire, reported at 7:23 a.m., caused fire damage to the living room and smoke and heat damage throughout the two-story wooden-frame structure. The cause, while not suspicious, was undetermined Monday. Firefighters estimated the damage at 14,000. The home is owned by Eric Kinsey of New Middletown.
Attempted homicide
MERCER, Pa. -- William Bobbert, 34, of Grove City, is accused of criminal attempted homicide after an altercation with a female friend's ex-boyfriend.
Pennsylvania State Police said Randy Bartolone, 30, went to Bobbert's Bottlehill Road home to return property belonging to Bartolone's ex-girlfriend at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Police said a brief argument ensued and as Bartolone was driving off, two shots were fired at his car. The victim was hurt by shattered glass. Police did not identify Bartolone's ex-girlfriend.
Hit and run crash
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police are searching for the driver of a Dodge Charger that crashed into another car at Grimes and Lyndall streets. According to witnesses, the Charger was speeding down Lyndall Street and failed to stop at a stop sign before crashing into a car driven by Jennie Mitchell, 54, of Waldo Street at 6:18 p.m. Sunday. Police said Mitchell was taken to Jameson Hospital and then flown to another hospital for treatment. They did not know which hospital treated Mitchell. Police said the driver of the Charger ran off after the crash.
Grenade tossed
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- No one was seriously hurt when a grenade was thrown through a Harrison Street window. Greenville-West Salem Police said at 1 a.m. Monday a live canister grenade filled with smoke was thrown through a window that had been previously vandalized and was covered in plastic. The grenade nearly caused a fire in the bedroom where a 34-year-old man was sleeping. When the man woke, his home was filled with smoke. Police said the grenade melted into the carpeting because of the heat. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at (724) 588-4190.
