YOUNGSTOWN -- Stage Fright, a vaudeville-style open-mic performance night, will begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Center for the Arts, 220 W. Boardman St.
The Halloween-themed event will feature bands, musicians, dancers, writers, actors and singers. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes. Admission is 3.
Registration begins at 7 p.m. Space is limited. The theater is available for practice between 7 and 7:45 p.m. A special-effects makeup lesson will be offered by local film company DSK Productions in the gallery at 7 p.m.
DSK Productions and filmmaker Steven Andrew will screen original films and film trailers. Other featured performers include The Zou (with "Rocky Horror Picture Show" songs), The Giants of Gender, tap dancer Brandon Martin, Funny Farm headliners Murad G. Youngstown nativeto entertain on ship
Matthew Alexander of Youngstown has been hired as a ship-board entertainer by Norwegian Cruise Lines. He will perform on the ship Marco Polo until May 28.
The son of Gary and Michele Alexander, he graduated cum laude from Point Park University in Pittsburgh this year. He acted in productions at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, and was a singer-dancer at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania last summer.
While in Youngstown, Alexander was active in the Youngstown Playhouse. The Chaney High School graduate was also a member of Youngstown Connection song and dance troupe.
Concert, silent auctionfor Katrina victims
YOUNGSTOWN -- A benefit concert and silent auction for victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans will be 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at Victorian Players Theater, 702 Mahoning Ave.
The concert will feature Mike Stout and the Human Union, Autumn Myers and the Battle Hymns, Comedian Gab Bonesso and the Raging Grannies.

Proceeds will benefit New Orleans Women's Health and Justice Initiative, a woman's health clinic.
Jazz, concert bandsteam up for food bank
AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown Fitch Jazz Ensemble and Youngstown Area Community Concert Band will present their eighth annual Holiday Benefit Concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 30 at Fitch High School Auditorium, 4560 Falcon Drive. Proceeds will be given to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Mahoning County. Admission is 5.
Holiday and seasonal music will be performed in various styles by the two bands. The Fitch High Jazz Ensemble's music will be mostly rock, swing and Latin, while the community band's music will be more traditional. The community band consists of volunteer adult musicians from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties in Ohio, and Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania.
The concert was the idea of Joseph Pellegrini, director of both bands, who wanted a formal performance venue to show off the talents of the bands, while at the same time giving back to the community in some way. Proceeds of the past seven concerts have gone to the Second Harvest Food Bank, Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, September 11th Fund, Toys for Tots and Chelsea Huntington, a burn victim from Austintown Fitch High School.
People's art show
CLEVELAND -- The 17th annual People's Art Show will open Friday at the Cleveland State University Art Gallery and run through Dec. 15. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. The show is an unjuried, uncensored exhibition celebrating creativity, diversity and imagination. The exhibit is open to all; artists may submit two works of any size in any medium, in any subject. All entries are exhibited. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. It is at the corner of East 23rd Street and Chester Avenue.
