Outstanding senior volunteer singled out for recognition

CLEVELAND -- On Oct. 5 Minnie Andrews of Poland was honored by Medical Mutual of Ohio as one of Ohio's outstanding senior citizen volunteers.
She was nominated by Mahoning Retired Teachers Association, which acknowledged her years of service to the community and her positive impact on many lives.
Andrews, 83, retired from teaching and was recruited as a teaching volunteer, working with children with disabilities in the Valley. She became activity director for the Youngstown Diocese and church seniors. As chairperson of the Catholic education scholarship committee she has worked to further interest in Catholic education and to assist young people with their education.
As a member of the Youngstown Business and Professional Women, she served as scholarship chairwoman from 1996 to 2006, assisting women to achieve their career goals. She was the YWCA 2003-2004 Woman of the Year.
With the MRTA, Andrews was awarded the Ohio Retired Teachers Association and MRTA honors and received the State of Ohio Greatest Volunteer Award with 3,089 hours. She also served as an Ohio high school counselor for five years and as PTA president at four schools.
This is the 16th year that Medical Mutual has honored individuals 65 and older for exemplary community service.
