Hunter education courses
Brookfield Tri-District Conservation Club will sponsor a hunter education course from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at the clubhouse on Sharon-Hogue Road in Brookfield Township. Those participating must attend all three sessions in order to complete the course, which is required of all hunters by the state. The course is free of charge and will be conducted by volunteer certified instructors. Course certification is accepted in all 50 states. United Local Community Education Department will offer the hunter safety course from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 7, 9, 14 and 16. To register call Chuck Greenwood at (330) 223-1521.
Safety program honored
COLUMBUS -- Ohio's Mine Safety Program, directed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, won first place in the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration's annual training materials competition.
The award was presented at a national mine instructors' conference held recently in West Virginia, where health and safety trainers from across the country gathered to exchange innovative ideas and fresh materials. The training materials competition drew entries from academia, state government and the mining industry. All entries were judged on purpose, delivery systems and content.
This year marks the second time the ODNR Division of Mineral Resources Management has received a national award for the development of mine safety materials. In 2004, the division was recognized for developing the best new training materials in the nation.
Geology guidebook
COLUMBUS -- A new guidebook that explores the building stones and cultural geology of the City of Akron is available from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Akron publication joins similar guidebooks that explore the cultural geology of Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and portions of Dayton.
The ODNR Division of Geological Survey published the Guidebook to the Building Stones and Cultural Geology of Akron, which was authored by Joseph T. Hannibal of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. It explains the types of locally occurring stone and how those types were used for construction in Akron.
The guidebook contains 80 illustrations, including photographs and sketches of buildings, bridges and monuments in the city.
The Guidebook to the Building Stones and Cultural Geology of Akron and other Ohio geological guidebooks may be ordered from the ODNR Division of Geological Survey, Geologic Records Center, for 11, plus handling and tax for the county to which the merchandise is being shipped (for Ohio addresses only).
