Wednesday: 9 a.m. hike. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at Kirk Road. Easy rating, 2 or 4 miles.
Nov. 3: 7 p.m. Learn about the phases of the moon. Meet at Stavich Bicycle Trail a the eastern end of East Liberty Street in Lowellville. Moderate difficulty due to length and hill. 4 Miles.
Nov. 3 or 4: 11 a.m.-noon or 1-2 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m.-noon, Saturday. Children ages 3-5 and their adult companions will sample a variety of apples and select their favorites. Each child will discover the apple's hidden secret and make a dried apple wreath to take home. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens (FRG) to register. Fee: 6 R., 8 NR.
Nov. 3, 4 or 5: Friday & amp; Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Shop in the Fellows Riverside Garden's Holiday Open House. An opportunity to purchase unique gifts for your family and friends. You'll find beautiful home d & eacute;cor items, jewelry and accessories, garden items and more.
Nov. 4: 1:30-3 p.m. Each child 6 and older up with an adult will create a turkey for the Thanksgiving table. Cornhusks and gourds will be used to make this whimsical holiday decoration. Call FRG to register. Fee: 5R, 7NR.
Nov. 4: 2-4 p.m. Join us for the final kayak trip of the year, which is subject to weather conditions. Not for first-time kayakers. Participants must be at least 18 and will be required to complete a waiver. Single and tandum kayaks are available. Reservations must be made 36 hours before the program. Call Ford Nature Center (FNC) for details. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch. Fee: 12/person R, 15/person NR. Second person in tandum is half-price.
Nov. 4: 10 a.m. Author Victor Davis Hanson takes on the immigration issue in "Mexifornia: A State of Becoming," published in 2003. The National Review called it "One of the most enlightening books yet to be written on one of our most difficult subjects." Meet at FNC for the naturalist-led discussion.
Nov. 5.: 1 p.m. Take a short walk to view what might be the largest oak tree found in Mill Creek Park. Afterward, we'll drive to Canfield to see Ohio's state champion white oak. Meet at 1111 Boardman Canfield Road (the plaza on U.S. Route 224 directly across from West Golf Drive). Easy rating, under 1 mile.
Nov. 5: 11 a.m. Stretch your legs on this hike with park volunteers Jim Thornton and Mark Dolak. Meet at the Golf Course overflow parking lot on West Golf Drive. Easy rating, 1 or 3 miles.
Nov. 7: 5:30-8 p.m. Lynn Cardwell will teach you how to construct a tree-shaped wall plaque with leaves naming family members. The work will be glazed, fired and ready to take home Nov. 28. Call FRG to register. Fee: 32 ( 25 FFRG members).
Nov. 8: 1-3 p.m. or 6:30-8:30 p.m. Amaryllis, a dramatic though easy-to-care-for plant, will add color and pizzazz to your holidays. Learn about the many varieties of this plant and receive three different, top-quality bulbs to pot and take home. Call FRG to register. Fee: 25R; 32NR.
Nov. 9: 10, 10:45 or 11 a.m. It's turkey time, and turkeys are appearing everywhere in Mill Creek Park. Two-year-olds, accompanied by adults, will celebrate this special bird with storytelling and a host of fun activities. Call FNC to register.
Nov. 10 or 11: 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Friday or 10 a.m. Saturday. Preschool Nature Hour. Find out why some woodland creatures are getting ready to curl up and sleep. Each child ages 3-5 and a parent will be treated to fun activities including a short, but rocky hike to look for dens. Preregister at FNC. Meet at Bears Den Cabin. Fee: 2R, 3 NR.
Nov. 11: 2 p.m. Veterans Day hike. Meet at Lake Glacier Boathouse parking lot. Moderate difficulty with hills, 3 miles.
Nov. 12: 2 p.m. Meet at FNC for a hike. Moderate difficulty with hills and steps, 3 miles.
Nov. 15: 9 a.m. Meet at Yellow Creek Park office, Struthers, for a hike. Moderate difficulty wit hill and steps, 1, 2 or 3 miles.
Nov. 17: 8:30 -10 a.m. Start the morning with a brisk walk in FRG. Return to the Gardens Caf & eacute; to enjoy a light breakfast and learn about the family of plants that includes coffee and gardenia. Call FRG to register. Fee: 6R, 8NR.
Nov. 18: 10 a.m. -noon. Highlight your Thanksgiving table with a cornucopia filled with fresh flowers and gourds. Marie Boracz will help you create this elegant holiday centerpiece. Call FRG to register. 25R, 32NR.
Nov. 19: 2 p.m. We'll explore the southern part of Mill Creek Park and look for any wildflowers still in bloom. Meet at Deerpath Drive off Hitchcock Road in Boardman. Easy rating with muddy conditions, 2 miles.
Nov. 25-26: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Old Fashioned Christmas at Lanterman's Mill. Don't miss the chance to taste chestnuts roasted by an open fire, purchase unique gifts, and be entertained by a juggler and a bagpiper, and other fine musicians. Call FNC for more information.
Nov. 28: 7 p.m. Audubon Society Mahoning Valley. Learn about the amazing woodpeckers of Ohio from Patrice Harvey, certified volunteer naturalist. Make a suet feeder from a pre-drilled log that will be ready to hang when you get home. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m., program at 7 p.m. Meet at MetroParks Farm, Canfield.
