Woman shot in armin fight at apartment
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 20-year-old woman who visited her sister at an apartment on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard late Monday night told police she was shot in the right forearm during a fight with another young woman with whom she has been feuding.
Sharon R. Tapscott, of Clyde Street, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center around 11:10 p.m. Monday for treatment. She identified her assailant to police. The case has been turned over to detectives.
Student suspendedover threatening note
HUBBARD -- School officials suspended a 17-year-old Hubbard High School student after a threatening note was written to another student. A 14-year-old girl told Principal Ron Garrett last Thursday that a boy had given her a threatening note.
After Garrett confronted the boy, he handed over a note that said "Die Now!!" and contained two profanities, a police report said. The boy is suspended for 10 days with a district recommendation for expulsion. No criminal charges have been filed.
Driver facing chargesin death of brother
YOUNGSTOWN -- An aggravated-vehicular-homicide charge was filed Tuesday against Johnny Serrano, 25, of Guss Avenue, whose 17-year-old brother died in a fiery crash Oct. 11 on Poland Avenue, said city Prosecutor Jay Macejko. The prosecutor said Serrano's blood-alcohol content was 0.155, nearly double the legal limit of 0.08.
Detective Sgt. Patricia Garcar, an accident investigator, has said that Serrano lost control around 9:08 p.m. and struck a pole in the 1200 block of Poland Avenue. The car then burst into flames. The victim, Edward Serrano, had been a junior at The Rayen School.
Election to precedeSWCD awards banquet
CORTLAND -- The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District's 56th annual awards banquet will be Nov. 3 at Garden Brook Banquet Center on state Route 5. The evening begins with the election of two board supervisors from 5:30 to 6:35 p.m. Voters do not have to stay for the banquet. The three candidates are Richard Houk, Peter Kepner and Joe Parise.
Dinner will be served beginning at 6:45 p.m. followed by a speaker and awards program. The speaker will be Dale Arnold, director of energy services for the Ohio Farm Bureau, who will speak on alternative energy. Tickets can be purchased at the SWCD office, 520 W. Main St., by Friday. Thief escapes into river
CAMPBELL -- A man who stole copper wire from Sherman International on Union Street dropped the wire, jumped a fence and then went into the Mahoning River while being chased by a security guard around 11:20 p.m. Monday, police said. The suspect was not found during a search of the area, police said.
Halloween Safe Night
WARREN -- Halloween Safe Night for all children up to age 12 will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Warren Family YMCA, 210 High St., or Eastwood Family YMCA, 995 Youngstown-Warren Road, Niles. The free program will include games, cupcake walk and costume contests. The first 150 children at each facility will receive a trick-or-treat bag and a gift.
'Calls of the Wild'
CANFIELD -- Alex Vedrzinski, a wildlife call impersonator, will present "Calls of the Wild" during a meeting of the Northeastern Ohio Forestry Association at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.
Vedrzinski is an eight-time Ohio state call champion, a two-time grand national champion, and a world gobbling champion. He also is an expert on coyotes and will share his knowledge about the animals living both in rural and suburban areas.
