GM may reschedule for OSU-Michigan

LORDSTOWN -- Production schedules may be revised so that workers at General Motors' Lordstown complex can watch next month's Ohio State-University of Michigan football game.
The plant, which produces the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5, doesn't normally work Saturdays, but GM has scheduled some Saturday work recently to increase the number of cars that can be sold.
Turns out one of the scheduled days is Nov. 18, the day when Ohio State meets Michigan. The longtime rivals are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the country by The Associated Press.
Enough Lordstown workers have asked for the day off that management and union officials are exploring whether to switch production for the afternoon shift from Nov. 18 to Nov. 11. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
United Auto Workers Local 1112 is conducting a survey of afternoon shift workers to determine if enough workers are interested in making the switch. If the demand is there, then the union will ask for volunteers from both shifts to work Nov. 11.
If enough volunteers can't be found, then workers will be required to show up Nov. 18, the union said. The complex has about 2,000 workers on the afternoon shift.
