YOUNGSTOWN -- Flu and pneumonia shots are offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday by the Youngstown City Health District, Mahoning County District Board of Health, and the Struthers Health Department at the city health district offices at 345 Oak Hill Ave. The costs are 10 for flu and 30 for pneumonia shots. There is no charge for Medicare Part B recipients. Persons on Medicare or Medicaid must bring their cards to determine if they will have any out-of-pocket costs. Police say man triedto steal boots at Kmart
AUSTINTOWN -- A man accused of trying to steal a pair of boots from the Kmart store on Mahoning Avenue is charged with robbery and assault, police said. John Jarrell, 29, of Viall Road, was charged after a scuffle with loss-prevention officers, said Lt. Bryan Kloss. Kloss said Jarrell was seen at 11:05 a.m. Monday in the shoe department, where he put on the boots and tried to leave without paying for them.
Kloss said two store officers confronted him in the parking lot, where he struggled with them and bit one of them. He broke loose and ran behind Westgate Plaza, where he was caught with the assistance of a store owner there, Kloss said.
Bad-check charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Patricia Owens of Whole Man Ministries on Seneca Street was bound over from municipal court to a Mahoning County grand jury Monday on a bad-check charge. Police said Owens gave a refund check of 2,000 to the Time Keeper Drum & amp; Flag Line of Youngstown for a canceled trip and the check bounced.
Owens, 52, of Alameda Avenue, was paid to arrange a trip last month to Atlanta for four chaperons and 30 kids in the drum and flag line, police said. When the group arrived at the Liberty Plaza, only one bus was available; the second bus reportedly broke down in Toledo. Owens told the youth group president that 10 kids would have to be eliminated from the trip, but that was unacceptable to the president, and the entire trip for the flag line was canceled, reports show.
Vacant house burned
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire at 75 Haseltine Ave. was deliberately set and the roof of the vacant house collapsed shortly after firefighters arrived around 11 p.m. Sunday, reports show. Firefighters said the structure appeared to have been vacant for a significant time. Damage was set at 5,000, a total loss.
Shooting investigated
LIBERTY -- Police are investigating a report of a gun fired outside a grocery store. Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, the security guard at the Giant Eagle, 4700 Belmont Ave., noticed three suspicious people in the store. He followed them into the parking lot, where they got into a green minivan. The three people in the minivan then began yelling profanities at the security guard, and one of them fired what appeared to be a revolver out the window. The guard was uninjured.
