Police seek motive in slaying, suicide

CHAMPION -- Police are trying to find out what sparked a 38-year-old Sharon, Pa., man to shoot and kill his former girlfriend and turn the gun on himself.
Police theorize that the gunman, Alan Darlington, of Thomas Street, entered the home at 3553 Kuszmaul Ave. on Saturday evening, shot his former girlfriend, Pamela Smith, 36, and then shot himself.
Smith lived at the Kuszmaul home with her parents.
The Trumbull County coroner's office said Darlington died of a single wound to the head. Since Smith died at St. Elizabeth Health Center, the Mahoning County coroner also is investigating. The Mahoning coroner said Smith died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Police said Smith's parents were home about 6 p.m. when Darlington went into the house, into the basement and shot Smith.
The engine of the car Darlington arrived in was still running when police arrived, they said.
