Poland cops seek assailant

The homeowner fired two shots at the intruder.
POLAND -- Township police are looking for the person responsible for knocking on an East Wood Street man's door and punching him in the face. The victim fired two shots as his assailant fled.
Police Chief Brian Goodin said the homeowner told officers someone knocked on his door just before 8 a.m. Sunday asking for help. The man said he was punched in the face and knocked to the ground when he opened the door.
The intruder immediately ran from the home after striking the homeowner. Goodin said the homeowner, after being knocked to the ground inside the home, reached for a handgun that was on a nearby table.
The homeowner fired two shots at the man as he ran toward a nearby wooded area.
Nothing was taken and police are uncertain if the intruder ever actually entered the home.
"We are still putting this together to see exactly what happened," the police chief said. "We don't have a motive or anything right now. We are interviewing the neighbors, but we have no idea what the intent was at this time."
Goodin said officers initially thought the intruder might have been shot by the homeowner. The state's Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and police dog units from Poland and Austintown were called to search the woods, but nothing was found.
The homeowner did have a small cut above the nose, Goodin said. He refused to be taken to the hospital and was given medical attention by paramedics.
