Phantoms fall to U.S. team, 10-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- James vanRiemsdyk scored four goals to lead the U.S. National Under-18 Team to a 10-1 win over the Mahoning Valley Phantoms Saturday.
The U.S. took charge early and didn't let up. VanRiemsdyk opened the scoring when he redirected a centering pass in the low slot to make it 1-0 with 7:18 remaining in the first period.
The U.S. team (7-6-1) scored four goals in the first period -- by Richard Manley, A.J. Sturges and vanRiemsdyk again -- and four more in the second.
Those U.S. goals came from Matt Rust, Teddy Ruth and two by vanRiemsdyk, making it 8-0 before the Phamtoms got on the board.
The U.S. out-shot the Phantoms (6-7-1), 26-22, and was 4-for-12 on power plays.
The Phantoms were 0-for-7 on power plays. Mike Fillinger scored the team's only goal, at 12:47 of the second period, on assists by Dustin Cloutier and Trent Bonnet.
The U.S. scored goals by Brennan Vargas and Ryan Schnell in the third period.
The Phantoms conclude their season-opening 16-game road trip next weekend when they travel to Alpena, Mich. Both games begin at 7 p.m. and will be web-cast on www.mvpphantoms.com.
