AUSTINTOWN -- The Austintown Salvation Army invites area residents to do some Christmas shopping and support the local Salvation Army at the Shopping Extravaganza for Hunger, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Austintown Plaza.
In suite 410 behind Buffalo Wild Wings, shoppers will find tables of items for purchase from vendors, crafters and small businesses, and may participate in a silent auction of items donated by local businesses, said Capt. Patricia Musgrove of the Austintown Westside Chapel. Some auction items include a skate party for 10 valued at 100 from Skate Zone; bread for a year, gift certificates, and miscellaneous gift items from Panera Bread; salon services, and a Fifth Season gift card.
In addition to the silent auction, The Salvation Army will be offering at low prices home and garden items such as planters, small lawn furniture and outdoor gazebos. Admission is a canned or boxed food item.
Domestic-violence vigil
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sojourner House Domestic Violence Program will host its annual candlelight vigil in observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, in the rotunda of the Mahoning County Courthouse at noon on Tuesday. Poetry written by survivors of domestic violence will be read by Sojourner House staff, and musical entertainment will be provided.
Malinda Gavins, Sojourner's program director, will speak on the impact that domestic violence has on the community.
Sojourner House offers services to Mahoning County's victims of domestic violence. The services include shelter, court advocacy, case management, counseling, children's programming, community education and aftercare. A crisis line can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling (330) 747-4040.
Milton Township events
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township officials announce the following events, according to Leni Schulz, township fiscal officer: Events at the fire station are flu shots 1 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and a demonstration of water rescue equipment by Milton Township firefighters, 7 p.m. Nov. 21.
Group for grieving parents
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Empty Arms Support Group, which formerly met at the Race Street Medical Office Building in Greenville, is relocating to the Womancare Center, 875 N. Hermitage Road.
Empty Arms is a support group that offers support and emotional assistance during the grieving process after a miscarriage or infant loss. Members of the UPMC Horizon Maternity Department and parents who have experienced similar losses are available to share their experiences or just to listen.
The group meets the second Monday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. The next meeting is planned for Nov. 13. For more information about Empty Arms, call (724) 589-6286.
