Mathews' surge nets 42-21 win



The Mustangs led by only one point at halftime before breaking away.
CLEVELAND HEIGHTS -- After a wild first half, Mathews did the scoring in the final two quarters and beat Lutheran East 42-21 Saturday in an East Suburban Conference game.
The Mustangs (5-4, 3-2) led 22-21 at the break then shut out the Falcons (5-4, 2-3) in the second half.
Mathews had more first downs, 22-8, and scored first when Brad Hughes ran it in from 19 yards away.
Beaver Local 17, Chaney 15
HUBBARD -- Chaney quarterback Victor Toney scored on a 10-yard TD run with 4:43 left to cut the deficit to 17-15, but Beaver Local intercepted a Toney pass minutes later to thwart the Cowboys' comeback bid. Toney had 14 carries for 28 yards and completed 4 of 15 passes for 63 yards, a TD (on a 2-yard pass to Eric Preston) and two interceptions for Chaney (1-7). The last came on a third-and-10 with two minutes left when a Chaney receiver bobbled the ball, allowing a Beaver defender to intercept the pass.
Southington 13, Sts. John & amp; Paul 7 (2 OT)
ASHTABULA -- Brandon Wick's 8-yard run decided Southington's double overtime win over Ashtabula Sts. John & amp; Paul. Wick, whose 16-yard touchdown run put Southington on the board in the first quarter, finished with 84 yards on 22 carries.
Wilson 34, Akron North 20
AKRON -- Senior running back Rashad Robinson carried 15 times for 178 yards and had TD runs of 50 and 74 yards to lead Wilson to its first win of the season on Friday night.
Sophomore quarterback Braylon Rogers completed 8-of-15 passes for 157 yards and two TDs, a 25-yard strike to Michael Williams and a 46-yard connection to Lamar McQueen. Marqueal Smith also scored on a 6-yard TD run for the Redmen (1-8), who snapped a 13-game losing streak. Wilson had not won since beating Campell 20-16 in week 5 last season.
Robinson and Williams both had interceptions on defense and the Redmen had 394 yards of total offense, including 237 on the ground. Joey Myers made four PATs.
