YOUNGSTOWN -- The Community Mobilization Committee and the Junior Civic League's annual Political Forum will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St. Refreshments will be provided. The event is open to the public. Candidates' debate
LORDSTOWN -- Candidates for Ohio House of Representatives, county commissioner and county auditor are expected to attend a debate at 7 tonight in the Lordstown High School auditorium sponsored by the senior government class. A debate format will be followed for the 65th District House race, pitting incumbent Democrat Sandra Stabile Harwood of Niles against Republican Arno Hill of Lordstown. A debate is also planned for the commissioners race between Democrat Frank Fuda of Niles and Republican Niki Frenchko of Warren. Candidates expected to make presentations are Democrat Adrian Biviano of Niles, county auditor, who is being challenged by Republican Elizabeth McPherson of Warren; and Ohio House of Representative candidates Randy Law, R-64th of Warren, the incumbent, and Tom Letson of Warren, a Democrat.
TCBA endorsements
WARREN -- Trumbull County Bar Association announced Wednesday its preferred candidates for two seats on the 11th District Court of Appeals in the Nov. 7 general elections. The preference for the term beginning Feb. 9 went to Democrat Mary Jane Trapp of Russell Township in Geauga County over Republican Paul Brickner of Willoughby. Democrat Thomas E. Harris, a judge in the Conneaut Municipal Court, got the nod over incumbent Republican Diane V. Grendell for the term beginning Feb. 10. There are no candidates from Trumbull County for a seat on the court that has jurisdiction in Trumbull, Ashtabula, Lake, Geauga and Portage counties.
Calif. rep to speak
BOARDMAN -- U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez, a California Democrat, will deliver the keynote speech Friday at OCCHA's 34th annual dinner at Mr. Anthony's on South Avenue. U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, will introduce Sanchez. The social hour starts at 5:30 p.m., with dinner and the awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. OCCHA, Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana, is the city's primary Hispanic social service agency. Nutrition for women
YOUNGSTOWN -- Helping Other Women Inc. presents a topic on nutrition called "When I Am Discouraged, Who Will Encourage Me?" at 6 tonight at 2622 Mahoning Ave. on the West Side. Guest presenter is Carla Lockett, who will give guidelines on eating healthier to feel better. The session is free and open to all women. No children, please. Week Without Violence
WARREN -- The Warren YWCA and Someplace Safe Inc. are having two events Saturday at Eastwood Mall to honor the YWCA Week Without Violence. The two groups will sponsor Kids Safety Day, which will offer free photo identification folders for children and teens. Parents will receive kits with the child's height, weight, fingerprints and a photo identification. The YWCA and Someplace Safe also will sponsor the clothesline project, which honors women survivors and victims of domestic violence. The event encourages women who have experienced domestic violence to design their own T-shirts. The T-shirts will then be displayed in the main concourse of the mall to raise awareness about the problem of domestic violence. Halloween event at park
BOARDMAN -- The Great Pumpkin Carve-out in Boardman Park has been extended from dusk to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Participants are to bring their own carving tools. Haunted hayrides through the park's forest will be from dusk to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday and Oct. 27, 28 and 29. Jocko the Clown, campfire stories, a marshmallow roast and concessions are also on tap. Pumpkin donation is 2 and up. Hayrides are 5 for adults, and 3 for children 12 and under. There will be 1 off the rides with proof of township residency.
Drug discount card
MERCER, Pa. -- Saving an average 23.4 percent on their medications, 267 Mercer County residents used the National Association of Counties drug discount card in September. County commissioners released an update this week on the program, which was implemented in August. In the first month, 205 residents used it and saved an average 24.2 percent. Mercer County became eligible for the free discount card for residents when they joined NACo this summer. The cards, available at the county courthouse and at many municipal buildings and other sites around the county, provide savings only on prescriptions on which the resident has no other coverage.
