Poland tops Mooney in Div. II; Girard rolls



Springfield plays United on Thursday at 5:30 and Girard takes on Campbell at 7 in sectional title matches.
BOARDMAN -- Brittany Gamble scored 18 points and had 11 digs for the Poland High volleyball team, which defeated Mooney 18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 in a Division II sectional opener on Tuesday at Boardman High School.
Ashley Conger had 26 assists, 19 digs and five kills for the Bulldogs (16-7). Dayna Blangero had 16 digs and seven kills and Doni Muransky had nine points, 17 kills, five blocks and 11 digs.
Mooney (20-3) was led by Dayna Daltorio with 15 points. Kristin Donoghue had 16 digs, Vickie Kocanjer six blocks and Brittany Bleggi five points, nine kills and four blocks.
Salem 25-25-25, Struthers 11-7-9
BOARDMAN -- Taylor Toothman scored 22 points, with five aces and 22 assists for the Quakers (22-0). Amy Scullion scored 16 points, with four aces and seven kills. Brittany Gregory had five points, two aces, eight kills and two blocks.
Ashley Stein led the Wildcats (3-18) with five points, four digs and an ace. Briana Camerat had five digs and Amy Wess four digs.
Poland goes against Crestview at Boardman Thursday at 5 p.m.; and Salem takes on Wilson following that match.

Girard 25-25-25, Ursuline 9-5-3
SALEM -- Elise Roscoe scored 20 points with 11 aces, 12 kills and two blocks for Girard in a Div. III sectional semifinal match.
Cassie Guerrieri had 21 points, five aces, six kills, one dig and one block. Aysha Nickels had 30 assists, seven points, four aces and one dig.

SALEM -- Brittany Schrieber scored 15 points with two aces and seven kills for the Tigers (15-8). Whitney Yaeger had 23 kills and five blocks. Rachael Kennedy had 10 kills. Kallie Rogers scored six points and she had 37 assists.

SALEM -- United (13-8) advanced to the second round after beating Brookfield (13-10).
Springfield goes against United Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Girard (20-3) will take on Campbell at 7 in sectional title matches.

JEFFERSON -- Megan Kay had eight kills, two and blocks for the Leopards. Jessie Szakacs had 12 assists. Jessie Knez had four kills and Emily Hall had four assists for the Leopards (12-7).

BURTON -- In Division III sectional matches at Berkshire High gymnasium, Garfield posted a 25-22, 25-27, 25-18, 21-25, 15-12 victory over LaBrae; Gates Mills Hawkins topped Maplewood 25-13, 23-25, 17-25, 25-19, 15-9; Berkshire defeated Champion 25-15, 25-17, 25-16 and Grand Valley turned back Wickliffe 25-9, 14-25, 25-21 and 25-23.

Southern 25-20-25-25, Badger 10-25-17-14
LISBON -- Southern (1-20) eliminated the Braves (0-19) in a sectional opener.
Paula Bergert paced the Indians with 19 points, three aces and 56 sets. Emily Ramses had 14 points, eight aces, 11 kills and two blocks.
Cassie Tingler led the Braves with eight blocks and eight assists. Eli Matejka scored 15 points and Trisha Hall had five kills.
Western Reserve 25-25-25, Youngstown Christian 4-10-9
LISBON -- Kristiana Brown scored 27 points with five aces to spark the Blue Devils (12-9) Kailyn Hrabak had three assists and four kills and Kailyn Mowery scored 17 points and she had five aces.
Youngstown Christian is 0-17.
