Canadiens 5, Flames 4
MONTREAL -- Radek Bonk and Sheldon Souray each scored two goals and Alex Kovalev netted Montreal's third power-play goal of the game, leading the Canadiens. Matthew Lombardi scored twice in the first period for Calgary, and the game was tied at 2 after 20 minutes. The teams traded the lead twice in the second before Kovalev scored his second goal of the season on Montreal's sixth power play, giving the Canadiens the decisive 5-4 advantage. Dion Phaneuf had a goal and two assists, and Chuck Kobasew also scored for Calgary, which lost its second straight after opening its four-game road trip with a 1-0 win in Ottawa on Thursday.
Sabres 9, Flyers 1
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Maxim Afinogenov had a goal and four assists, helping the Sabres maintain their perfect record. Thomas Vanek had two goals and two assists, and Derek Roy scored twice for the Sabres (6-0), who posted a six-goal second period and are two wins shy of matching their best start set in 1975. Buffalo has also won 11 straight regular-season games, tying the franchise record established 21 years ago. Also scoring for the Sabres were Chris Drury, who extended his point streak to six games (seven goals and three assists), Jiri Novotny, Jaroslav Spacek and Henrik Tallinder. Buffalo had its biggest offensive output since a 10-1 win over Los Angeles last January. Jeff Carter spoiled Ryan Miller's shutout bid by scoring 2 minutes into the third period, but the Flyers have managed just 12 goals in six games. Philadelphia (1-4-1) was so inept that it failed to put a puck on net during a first-period penalty shot. Mike Richards went wide to the left in an attempt to draw out Miller, but the goalie stayed in position, leaving Richards unable to get off a shot.
Coyotes 5, Blues 2
ST. LOUIS -- Owen Nolan scored his first goal in two years, and the Phoenix Coyotes' offense broke out. Nolan, out of the NHL since the 2003-04 season, scored one of Phoenix's three goals in the third period. The Coyotes (2-4) had reached three in a game only twice before in the first five contests, but avoided their worst start since moving to Phoenix 10 years ago. After winning their season opener, the Coyotes dropped four straight.
