Suspected bomb closes I-71
CINCINNATI (AP) -- An interstate highway was shut down north of Cincinnati for about 4 1/2 hours Wednesday while police investigated the discovery of what appeared to be an explosive device found on the ground under an overpass.
"The Department of Transportation was doing some work on I-71 when they found a device that appears to be a bomb," said Tim Brown, a police officer in the suburb of Norwood.
He said the container had some kind of liquid, a clock and a battery. It was found about 9:30 a.m. The Cincinnati bomb squad blew up the device.
Capt. Robert Schleibaum of the Norwood Fire Department said the device appeared to be a homemade bomb although its contents would have to be analyzed.
Fire Chief Curt Goodman said that it was difficult to say whether someone intentionally put the device by the road or how long it had been there. He would not say how big the container was.
Traffic in both directions was shut down from about 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., creating lines of vehicles several miles long on a main north-south route in southwest Ohio. Traffic was diverted to a nearby state route.
