YOUNGSTOWN -- The Business Finance Tech Prep class at Choffin Career and Technical Center is collecting new children's mittens or gloves. These will be donated to the Mahoning County Children Services Board, which will distribute them. Over the last 25 years, Choffin has donated more than 3,863 items. Monetary donations can also be made toward the purchase of these items. To donate, contact Mrs. Hartz at (330) 744-8759. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 11.
Bomb threat at Sparkle
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sparkle Market at 1912 Mahoning Avenue was closed for about 25 minutes while police searched the store after a bomb threat. Police were called to the store around 6:50 p.m. Monday. A store manager said he and security officers evacuated the store after a man with a foreign accent called and said, "There is a bomb in the store. Don't try me," and some other things the manager said he couldn't understand. Patrolmen and detectives searched the store, and business resumed after they found nothing.
Panel seeks applicants
BOARDMAN -- The township is accepting letters of interest from township residents wishing to serve on the site plan review committee. Letters should be submitted by Dec. 8 to the township zoning office, 8299 Market St., Boardman 44512. Committee membership is to consist of an architect, developer, real estate agent, landscape architect and a citizen. The committee makes recommendations to the township board of appeals regarding requests for variances from the terms of the township zoning ordinance's site plan review.
Forged traveler's checkat Starbucks store
AUSTINTOWN -- Another store has reported receiving a counterfeit 100 traveler's check. An employee at Starbucks, 851 N. Canfield-Niles Road, told police a woman came in around 7 p.m. Wednesday and paid for a gift card with the check. She realized later that the check was a forgery. The woman who passed the check did not match the description of either of two other women who passed fake American Express traveler's checks at six township businesses Nov. 9 and 13. The woman who passed the check at Starbucks was black. The two other women are white. Police are working on identifying and arresting those women, who are also suspects in passing forged traveler's checks in Canfield Township and in the Akron area.
Fuel Mart robbed again
AUSTINTOWN -- The Fuel Mart, 5301 Seventy-Six Drive, has been robbed again, police said Monday. The latest robbery happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The store was also robbed Nov. 11. The cashier told police that in the latest robbery, a man came in pointing a semiautomatic handgun at her. He said, "Quick, give me the money" and jumped over the counter, a police report says. He asked where the safe was, got it from under the counter and took cash. He walked her back to the shower room and bound her wrists and ankles with plastic ties. Then he fled. She got free five minutes later and called police.
Ornament workshop
ALLIANCE -- The John T. Huston-Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center of Mount Union College will hold a holiday ornament workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Participants will be using natural materials from the Nature Center. No registration is required. The center is six miles south of Mount Union College on Daniel Street. HOWLAND -- Township trustees will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. today at the administration building to accept a general liability insurance quote of 49,600 from Ohio Township Association Risk Management Authority and a 2006 Christmas tree collection grant from the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District.
