BOSTON -- Justin Williams and Erik Cole scored goals nine seconds apart in the second period for Carolina, which snapped a two-game losing streak, avoiding their worst run since the defending Stanley Cup champions dropped their first four games of the season. Eric Staal netted his team-leading 14th goal for Carolina, a power-play tally in the first period. Eric Belanger and Andrew Ladd had the other goals for the Hurricanes. Patrice Bergeron scored a power-play goal Boston, which lost for the second time in seven games. The Bruins' previous six games were decided by one goal. John Grahame stopped 25 shots for the Hurricanes. Boston starter Tim Thomas was pulled after Carolina's third goal.
Minnesota 4, Phoenix 0
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Niklas Backstrom recorded his first NHL shutout and Minnesota scored three special-team goals to beat Phoenix. Starting his second straight game in place of Manny Fernandez, Backstrom stopped 28 shots. Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Branko Radivojevic scored power-play goals, Pascal Dupuis added a short-handed tally, and Mark Parrish scored at even strength for the Wild, 9-1-1 at home. Kurtis Foster and Todd White each had two assists. Curtis Joseph was shaky in stopping 18 shots for Phoenix and was replaced by David Leneveu after Radivojevic made it 4-0 at 6:57 of the third period.
Ducks 4, Devils 2
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Todd Marchant scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period while Anaheim was short-handed and added an empty-netter, leading the Ducks to victory in a matchup of division leaders. Dustin Penner and Samuel Pahlsson scored and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 23 saves for the Ducks, who are off to the best start in franchise history and lead the Western Conference with a 16-2-6 record. Brian Gionta had a power-play goal and Patrik Elias also scored for the Devils, who began the day tied with the New York Rangers for first place in the Atlantic Division. Martin Brodeur made 33 saves.
Maple Leafs 7, Capitals 1
WASHINGTON -- Toronto scored twice in the opening three minutes, then added three goals during a 60-second span of the second period. Toronto led 2-1 before Bryan McCabe scored at 10:09 of the second period with the Maple Leafs enjoying a two-man advantage. Jeff O'Neill scored another power-play goal 14 seconds later, and Hal Gill concluded the rapid-fire barrage against Capitals goaltender Brent Johnson at 11:09. Darcy Tucker added his team-high 16th goal just over three minutes later for a 6-1 lead. Andrew Raycroft had 22 saves for the Maple Leafs, who went ahead 2-0 on first-period goals by Kyle Wellwood and Michael Peca. Alex Ovechkin scored a power-play goal for the Capitals, who have lost five straight.
Blues 3, Red Wings 2, SO
DETROIT -- Martin Rucinsky and Doug Weight scored in the shootout to lift St. Louis. Blues goalie Manny Legace stopped Jason Williams on his attempt and Pavel Datsyuk hit the goal post. Petr Cajanek scored twice for the Blues, who beat Detroit for only the third time in their last 16 games, and Dallas Drake added two assists. Legace stopped 41 shots in his first game back at Joe Louis Arena after playing with Detroit for seven seasons. Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist and Nicklas Lidstrom also scored for the Red Wings, who are winless in their last four games. Dominik Hasek made 17 saves.
Senators 6, Panthers 4
SUNRISE, Fla. -- Dany Heatley had three goals and Jason Spezza scored the winner to lead Ottawa. It was Heatley's second hat trick of the year and he had an assist for a season-high four points. Dean McAmmond and Mike Fisher added goals for the Senators. Ray Emery had 33 saves. Gary Roberts scored two goals for the Panthers. Stephen Weiss and Drew Larman also scored. It was Larman's first career NHL goal in two games. Ed Belfour stopped 26 shots.
Canadiens 2, Sabres 1, OT
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Defenseman Sheldon Souray scored with one second left in overtime, lifting Montreal to a come-from-behind victory. Saku Koivu, who tied the game eight minutes into the third period, also had an assist, and Cristobal Huet stopped 29 shots, including 23 over the final 45 minutes. Jaroslav Spacek scored for the Sabres (18-3-2).
Lightning 3, Thrashers 2, OT
TAMPA, Fla. -- Martin St. Louis scored with 2:35 left in overtime and Tampa Bay overcame a two-goal deficit. St. Louis picked up a loose puck behind the net before skating into the right circle and scoring the winner on a wrist shot. The Lightning forced overtime when Dan Boyle scored his second power-play goal of the game with 20.5 seconds left in the third. Jason Krog and Steve Rucchin had the Atlanta goals.
Stars 5, Kings 3
DALLAS -- Defenseman Philippe Boucher scored three power-play goals for his first career hat trick, leading Dallas. The Stars surged to a 3-0 first-period lead on two-man advantage goals from Boucher and one from defenseman Sergei Zubov. Eric Lindros assisted on all three. Seven of the goals came on the power play, two by Dustin Brown of the Kings, 2-4-1 in their last seven games.
Oilers 5, Blackhawks 1
EDMONTON, Alberta -- Petr Sykora had a goal and an assist to help Edmonton extend its winning streak to a season-high five games. Jarret Stoll, Marty Reasoner, Raffi Torres and Marc-Andre Bergeron also scored for the Oilers. Michael Holmqvist scored for the Blackhawks.
