Cardinal Mooney plans golden jubilee
A service project to benefit the community will be scheduled in the spring.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Cardinal Mooney High School's celebration of its golden jubilee will move into full gear with a dinner-dance in January for all alumni, parents and friends of the school.
A committee, chaired by Sister Jane Marie Kudlacz, school principal, has set up a yearlong schedule of events celebrating the school's 50th anniversary.
It was the committee's intent not only to celebrate the school's success but also to recognize Cardinal Mooney's gratitude to the community for the support the school has enjoyed, she said.
As a result, the theme of the celebration will be "Cardinal Mooney: Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence with Gratitude and Joy."
Activities began Oct. 11 with a morning prayer service celebrated at the South Side school commemorating the anniversary of the death of Edward Cardinal Mooney, who came to Youngstown in 1887 from Maryland, was ordained a priest in 1909 and rose to the highest ranks of the church.
He died in Rome in 1958 during the conclave that elected Pope John XXIII.

As part of the 50-year celebration, the Cardinal Mooney Theatre Department will present "The Music Man" on March 15-18. The cast will include students, faculty, elementary school pupils and alumni. Auditions will be in January.
On April 29, the committee has scheduled a Mass at St. Columba Cathedral, followed by a family event featuring exhibits, displays, tours, food and beverages and activities at the school.
Sister Jane Marie indicated the committee also is planning a service project in the spring that will allow the students, alumni, parents and friends to make a contribution back to the community in recognition of the benefits that Cardinal Mooney has enjoyed during its 50-year history.
From the earliest benefactor who contributed to the campaign to create the school in the mid-1950s to the parents, alumni, faculty and staff, pastors and priest and friends of today, "Cardinal Mooney is the product of the generosity and sacrifices of many, and we would like to use this year of celebration to note those sacrifices and express our gratitude for them," Sister Jane Marie added.
Additional details concerning the anniversary celebration will be posted on the school Web site at www.cardinalmooney.com.
