UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
Andrew Stevens of Girard, a mechanical engineering major, has been inducted into the Gold Key International Honour Society and Tau Beta Pi, an honorary engineering fraternity. He is a 2003 graduate of Girard High School.
ASHLAND UNIVERSITY, ASHLAND, OHIO
Keona Padgett, daughter of Anthony and Cherrie Padgett of Cortland, has been named a member of the Ashbrook Scholars at Ashland University. She is a political science major. The John M. Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs, created in the name of the late congressman, seeks to promote the study, research and discussion of the principles and practices of American constitutional government and preparation of students for careers in the public and private sector. Ashbrook Scholars are selected on the basis of academic and personal merit.
Jessica Arnal, daughter of Marcel and Donna Arnal of Cortland, is a member of the Alpha Phi sorority at Ashland University. She is majoring in hotel/restaurant management.
MARIETTA COLLEGE, MARIETTA, OHIO
Two Howland High School graduates, Rebecca McCullough and Tim Kemble, members of the Marietta Forensics Team, won individual awards in the 57th Ruth A. Wilcox Forensics Invitational Tournament held Nov. 4 at Marietta. McCullough, daughter of Colleen and Dan McCullough of Warren, won first place in Informative Speaking and third place in Program Oral Interpretation. She is a first-year student at Marietta, working toward majors in English and theater. Kemble, son of Alva and William Kemble of Warren, took third place in Extemporaneous Speaking. He is a junior at Marietta, majoring in political science. Teams hailing from 13 other schools in Ohio, West Virginia, Michigan, Indiana and Kentucky participated in the tournament.
WESTMINSTER, NEW WILMINGTON, PA.
Shannon Bobbert, a Westminster College English major, was recently selected as a 2006 SharonSteel Foundation Scholar. The competitive award for Mercer County students includes a 5,000 annual renewable scholarship and is awarded based on outstanding academic achievement, leadership potential and involvement in extracurricular and service achievement. Bobbert, a freshman, is a daughter of Earl and Karen Bobbert of Volant and a graduate of home schooling.
OHIO UNIVERSITY, ATHENS, OHIO
Ashley Senary, a 2003 graduate of Boardman High School, will be featured in the January issue of Seventeen magazine. The article will discuss her experience with weight-loss through diet and exercise and offer guidance to teenage girls seeking to improve their personal health. Senary's picture also will be included on the cover of the issue. Through efforts at the Davis YMCA in Boardman and her college fitness center, Senary lost 57 pounds over the course of seven months. She has been seen in a number of starring roles in local area Boardman Drama Guild theater productions and is a master's student majoring in political science. She is the daughter of Jim and Debbie Senary of Boardman.
KENT STATE UNIVERSITY, KENT, OHIO
Traci Sanders of Poland, daughter of John and Dianne Sanders of Boardman, was a member of the 2006 Homecoming Court. Sanders, a senior integrated science major, is president of the Kent Interhall Council and a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Student Athletic Advisory Board and the National Residence Hall Honorary and served as an orientation trainer. She was named Student Leader of the Year for 2005-06 and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and is a Student Ambassador. She is a graduate of Boardman High School.
