City firefighters fight two blazes Thursday

YOUNGSTOWN — City firefighters are investigating a fire labeled as an arson set just after 6 a.m. Thursday at a vacant South Side home.

A fire department official said the house at 362 W. Delason Ave. was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. The house, valued at $8,700, was destroyed.

The siding on a neighboring occupied house melted from the heat coming from the vacant house. Part of the vacant structure also fell into the neighboring home causing about $1,500 in damage. Residents of the home are still able to stay in the house, the fire official said.

Firefighters extinguished a small fire at 30 E. Boston Ave. on Thursday afternoon. Firefighters said a child accidentally set a mattress on fire, causing $750 in damage. There were no injuries in either fire.
