Police arrest pair in break-in at towing yard
Preliminary hearings for both people are set for next week.
BOARDMAN -- Two people were arrested after a witness reported seeing someone scaling the fence at a South Avenue towing company.
Mark A. Dodd, 21, of Youngstown, was charged with breaking and entering and possession of criminal tools.
His girlfriend, Rebecca S. Davis, 18, of Youngstown, was charged with complicity to breaking and entering.
Both were housed in the Mahoning County Justice Center with preliminary hearings scheduled for Tuesday in Mahoning County Court.
A man called police about 11:30 p.m. Monday to report that someone was climbing over the fence at Utsinger's Towing.
Spotted a car
When police arrived, they saw a car on the west side of the business. The car pulled onto South Avenue, then to Simon Road and onto Orlo Lane before its lights went off and it turned into a driveway on Orlo.
When an officer approached, he saw a compact disc player and two face plates on the floor of the passenger side of the car. The driver, Davis, told police that she was waiting for her boyfriend, Dodd, and when asked about the CD player and face plates she said that Dodd got them from Utsinger's.
The witness who reported the break-in described to police the man he saw climbing the fence. An employee who arrived at the business after receiving reports of the break-in told police that he had seen a man matching the witness' description walking on Lake Park Road.
An officer went to the Lake Park Road area and found Dodd, wearing the clothing described, covered in burrs around the front of his jacket and hood.
Police reported that Dodd told them he had a hammer and a screwdriver in his pockets. He also told police that he didn't even make it over the fence.
Police found Dodd's driver's license in the car Davis was driving.
But Davis told police that she had driven Dodd to Utsinger's, where he scaled the fence and got the stereo and two face plates. She said they then left and returned after getting some tools.
She had left
After being approached by the witness, she left the area.
Police said that when they confronted Dodd with the information, Dodd admitted taking the items and said he ran through the wooded area behind the business after Davis drove away.
