Dick Clark recountsmoment of paralysis
LOS ANGELES -- Nearly two years after a stroke, "American Bandstand" icon Dick Clark has recounted the stunning moment he realized his right side was paralyzed.
"It was a complete surprise," Clark told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Monday after his daily two-hour therapy session, which he said left him feeling "pooped."
Clark, who turns 77 on Nov. 30, knew there was something wrong when he awoke Dec. 6, 2004.
"I woke up in the morning and my right side didn't work. I thought a dog had slept on my side," said Clark, who sounded upbeat and could be clearly understood. "My wife said, 'I think you had a stroke,' and she drove me to the hospital."
Doctors at Burbank's Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center kept him hospitalized for weeks. Rehabilitation therapy sessions have continued ever since.
Recently, Clark has been busy promoting the Dec. 5-6 auction of his memorabilia at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. The self-professed pack rat plans to attend.
"I keep everything. It's one of my problems. I'm a saver," he said.
TomKat in Maldives
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have arrived in the Indian Ocean island chain of the Maldives, a government official has said.
"Yes, they are here, I can confirm that," chief government spokesman Mohamed Hussain Shareef told The Associated Press by phone Tuesday from the capital, Male. "They have gone to one of the islands, but this is very, very secret."
Cruise, 44, and Holmes, 27, exchanged wedding vows Saturday in a 15th-century castle in Bracciano, Italy, outside Rome.
Prince Charles on Web
LONDON -- The heir to the British throne has taken a leap into the Internet age, posting a day-in-the life video on his revamped personal Web site.
The short film follows Prince Charles through a typical day, showing him working at his London office, carrying out public engagements with his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and flying by helicopter to his country home for a reception.
The site also allows royal-watchers to sign up for e-mail updates on topics ranging from Charles' sons, Princes William and Harry, to his Duchy Originals brand of organic food products. There is also a section for children, with puzzles and games.
