Del Rio sports jacket and tie for game
On Sunday, San Francisco Coach Mike Nolan wore a suit on the sideline.
THE ORLANDO SENTINEL
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville Coach Jack Del Rio is usually all business when it comes to football, and he looked it on the sideline Monday night. Del Rio became the second coach this week -- and only the second since 1993 -- to don a coat and tie for a game.
After receiving permission from the NFL to wear a Reebok-manufactured suit, Del Rio donned a dark one, matching the all-black uniforms his players wore against the New York Giants. He sported a white shirt and teal tie.
On Sunday, San Francisco Coach Mike Nolan wore a suit on the sideline. He was responsible for pushing the league to allow a coat and tie on the sideline. Nolan's father, Dick Nolan, wore a coat and tie when he coached the 49ers in the 1970s.
"When I saw Mike Nolan's comments a few years back I said, 'If Reebok ever put together something, I'd be interested. I'd love to do that,' " Del Rio said before the game. "I may end up looking more like John Madden at the end. But I was a Raiders fan when I grew up, and he's got the jacket off and the shirt flying everywhere and the tie . . . but I think it's a professional look."
Del Rio will go back to his customary sideline attire next week when the Jags go to Buffalo, but will wear a suit again Dec. 10 when Jacksonville plays host to Indianapolis.
"What I wear is really insignificant," he said. "Standing on the sidelines is not a big deal. The players play the game and that's really what the story is about, but yeah, that is what has transpired."
Darius sidelined
An already banged-up Jaguars defense lost another starter Monday night. SS Donovin Darius was helped off the field and then carted in for X-rays on his right ankle during the Giants' second offensive series.
Darius was in extreme pain, and when he was being helped off the field yelled at Giants WR Visanthe Shiancoe.
It was Shiancoe who threw a low block on Darius away from the ball. Darius landed awkwardly on his ankle.
The Jags called the injury a sprain and could not provide further details.
