Pa crash injures two; little boy helps in rescue
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Tina M. Miller, 16, of Oswald Street, Wampum, Pa., was in critical but stable condition Sunday afternoon at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh after a two-car accident Saturday on state Route 288 in Wayne Township.
Miller was the driver of a car that was eastbound on 288 when she lost control of her vehicle and crossed the center lane into the path of of a vehicle driven by Kelly A. Allen, 29, of Delaware Avenue, New Castle, at about 7 p.m.
The accident occurred a half-mile east of Jockey Moore Road.
Miller was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated, as did Allen, said police from the New Castle barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police. Both were flown by helicopter to the hospital.
Allen, who sustained leg injuries, was taken to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian Hospital, but hospital officials did not release information on her condition.
State police credited Allen’s son, Clayton Campbell, 9, for removing three other children from his mother’s vehicle and placing them in a lawn area. He also returned to the vehicle and turned the ignition off to avoid a fire, police said.
Clayton, his sister, Lucille Allen, 2, and two cousins, Camellia McQuiston, 4, and Derickok McQuiston, 9, received minor injuries and were taken to Ellwood City Hospital for treatment.
All of the occupants of the two vehicles were wearing safety belts or were in car seats, state police said.
