WASHINGTON -- Rod Brind'Amour had two goals and two assists, and Erik Cole also had a hand in every score for the Carolina Hurricanes. Brind'Amour and Cole scored power-play goals less than two minutes apart in the second period, sending Carolina on its way to its fourth victory in five games. Brind'Amour scored for the fourth game in a row and extended his point streak to seven games. Backup goalie John Grahame made 21 saves to earn his first win for the Stanley Cup champions since joining them in the offseason. Brind'Amour, the Hurricanes' captain, entered the game tied for third in the NHL with 26 points. He assisted on Cole's opening goal, scored himself shortly thereafter to make it 2-0, assisted on Ray Whitney's goal early in the third period and ended the scoring with 1:47 remaining off a pass from Cole, who finished with three assists. Richard Zednik, who missed the previous six games with an injury, scored for the Capitals.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Jamie Langenbrunner scored twice and set up another to lead the Devils to the win. Zach Parise scored a goal and had two assists and rookie linemate Travis Zajac had a career-best three assists as New Jersey avenged an embarrassing 8-1 loss at Ottawa on Oct. 21. Martin Brodeur, who gave up six goals in 34 minutes in that loss, came within 14-plus minutes of recording his 84th career shutout before Ottawa made the game interesting on third-period goals by Chris Neil and Daniel Alfredsson. Ottawa, which had the best record in the Eastern Conference last season, is now 2-7-1 in its last 10 games, 7-11-1 this season and last in the Northeast Division.

ATLANTA -- Mike Ribeiro scored two goals in the opening period for Dallas and Patrik Stefan enjoyed a successful return to Atlanta. Stefan, the Thrashers' first pick in their inaugural 1999 draft, was traded to the Stars on June 24. He returned to score his first goal and earn his first two assists of the season. Atlanta has lost three straight for the first time this season. Marty Turco stopped 20 shots to help Dallas win for the ninth time in 10 games against Atlanta. Steve Rucchin, Glen Metropolit and Marian Hossa scored for the Thrashers.
Lightning 3, Islanders 2, SO
TAMPA, Fla. -- Dmitry Afanasenkov scored the lone shootout goal in the seventh round to lift the Lightning to the win.
Tampa Bay goalie Johan Holmqvist, who stopped 29 shots in regulation, didn't allow a goal during the shootout. He earlier made a glove save on an in-close shot by Viktor Kozlov with 42.8 seconds left in the third. Andy Hilbert hit the post on the Islanders' last shootout attempt. Rick DiPietro made 36 saves, including one on Vincent Lecavalier during a 2-on-1 with 1:29 left in overtime. Nikita Alexeev and Brad Richards scored for Tampa Bay. Lecavalier, who had an 11-game point streak end Wednesday, had two assists. "When eyeballs are closed, I guess," Islanders coach Ted Nolan said when asked about the last time he had a game without a power play. "I'm not too sure. There were a few penalties out there, but they missed the calls. It's one of those things. They had a no-hitter." The Islanders got goals from Radek Martinek and Mike York.
Flames 4, Red Wings 1
CALGARY -- Kristian Huselius had a goal and an assist, Miikka Kiprusoff narrowly missed another shutout and the Calgary Flames beat the Detroit Red Wings for their sixth straight victory. Matthew Lombardi, Daymond Langkow and Dion Phaneuf also scored for Calgary. Alex Tanguay had two assists for the fourth consecutive game. Detroit had won nine straight. Kiprusoff stopped 29 shots for his ninth win of the season. He ran his shutout streak to 160 minutes, 27 seconds to set a new franchise record, bettering the mark of 160:07 set by Fred Brathwaite in 2000-01. Dan Cleary ended Kiprusoff's streak with a power-play goal with 41 seconds left in the game.
