Civil-rights panel seeks entries for 2007 contest
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Civil Rights Commission is seeking entries for its statewide 2007 Martin Luther King Jr. Art, Writing & amp; Multimedia Contest.
The multimedia portion of the competition is new this year and is open only to high school students.
The use of multimedia in expression and presentation is a key skill in secondary education and business, and this event will help students hone their abilities in that area.
The goal of the competition is to enhance cultural awareness, empowerment, tolerance and to honor and encourage leadership for a multicultural society.
Schoolchildren in grades three through 12 are asked to creatively interpret, through art, writing and multimedia, the teachings of role models such as Dr. King. Those lessons can encourage today's young people to be leaders for diversity tomorrow.
The contest is really a youth leadership development program, offering a learning and reflective experience for its participants.
The official rules and entry form are available online at www.crc.ohio.gov and entries must be submitted by Dec. 15.
There will be one winner per grade level and the winners will be honored by community and business leaders at a program in Columbus on Jan. 31. Their artwork, essays and multimedia projects will be displayed at the Civil Rights Commission's central office throughout the year.
