CAMPUS NOTES \ In the spotlight



YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
Melanie Jean Diorio, daughter of Gary and Anna M. Diorio of Boardman, was an invited speaker at the 31st Annual National Italian American Foundation event in Washington, D.C., in October. Diorio, a freshman, is majoring in Italian and English education is a NIAF 2006 scholarship recipient. She is a 2006 graduate of Boardman High School. NIAF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Italian culture and heritage.
Renee Lynn Gould of Austintown, a junior science of education major, has been inducted into Golden Key International Honour Society, an organization recognizing outstanding college juniors and seniors. Gould is also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta honor society.
Victoria M. Chaney, an education major, has been selected to serve on the "Dean's Dozen" advisory board to the College of Education. Only 12 students are selected for the honor annually. Chaney, a 2004 Howland High School graduate, is secretary of Sigma Alpha Lambda honor society and president of the University Scholars program. She is serving her second year as a representative on YSU's Student Government Association.
MALONE COLLEGE, Canton
Christina Elliott, a senior from Boardman, has been inducted into the Delta Lambda chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma, the national professional health education honorary.
Mallory Graham, a junior communication arts major from Ellwood City, Pa., took first place with her poetry performance titled "What Women Want" at the Marietta College 57th Annual Wilcox Invitational, Marietta, Ohio. Graham also won first place with her mixed program titled "Name Game." Fourteen colleges and universities participated in the Marietta College invitational. Graham also took first place in mixed program with "Name Game," and third place in poetry with "What Women Want" at the Long Island Swing Tournament at Nassau College, New York. Thirteen colleges and universities had students in that tournament.
GENEVA COLLEGE, Beaver Falls, Pa.
Simeon Anderson of Youngstown, has been awarded a 1,000 Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship and will use the money to study elementary education at Geneva. Anderson is the 16th student scholarship recipient from the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Boardman.
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE, NEW WILMINGTON, PA.
Maranda Huff of New Castle and Courtney Turek of Canfield were members of the staff of the Argo, the Westminster College yearbook which has received the 2006 Showcase Award by Herff Jones Publishers. Huff is the daughter of George and Tina Huff and a junior psychology and human resources major. She was a photo editor. Turek is the daughter of John and Sally Turek and a 2006 Westminster College graduate. She was assistant editor-in-chief. The Argo was judged on specific criteria including: unity in design; consistency of layout; dynamic use of color; effective coverage and content; artistic use of type; and progressive improvement from previous years.
