YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's board of control approved spending 176,248 for ground water and soil testing at the former YBM Corp. location on Logan Avenue and Hubbard Road. The money comes from a Clean Ohio Fund grant. The board hired the Brownfield Restoration Group LLC of Akron on Wednesday to do the work. The city wants to clean up the 12-acre parcel and make it available for a company for light industrial use.
Manslaughter sent back
YOUNGSTOWN -- A three-judge panel of the 7th District Court of Appeals unanimously sent an involuntary manslaughter case involving the death of a 2-year-old boy back to Judge Maureen A. Cronin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for resentencing. The panel ruled this week that Jennifer Wolfe, 22, of Austintown, was sentenced under provisions of state law the Ohio Supreme Court declared unconstitutional while Wolfe's appeal was pending. In November 2005, Judge Cronin sentenced Wolfe to 10 years in prison in the Oct. 22, 2003, death of her son, Jesse, who Judge Cronin said was malnourished and badly bruised. The toddler was pronounced dead at Forum Health Northside Medical Center, and the Trumbull County coroner ruled his death a homicide by asphyxiation.
Subway thief sought
LIBERTY -- Township police continue to seek the man who stole 300 after tying up and pepper-spraying two employees at Subway eatery, Belmont Avenue. Police said a 6-foot-tall man wearing a ski mask entered through an open rear door Sunday. The door was open while employees emptied trash. Reports say the man demanded cash and was given money from the cash register. Employees convinced the man that the safe could not be opened. The man tied both employees and sprayed them before leaving the restaurant, reports said. One employee told police the man left in an older model Chevrolet Lumina.
Canfield Fair lawsuit
CANFIELD -- A Sharon, Pa., woman is suing the Canfield Fair Board over an injury from 2002. The suit was filed Wednesday by Joanne N. Madden. Madden was standing near the medical building during the fair Aug. 31 when a large sign was blown into her, the suit says. The suit alleges the sign was inadequately secured. She continues to require medical care, the lawsuit says.
Wilderness course
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- A wilderness first-aid training course will be offered by Titan Traverse of Westminster College on Saturday and Sunday at the college. The course prepares people to administer first aid in areas where immediate medical care is not available. Issues such as patient assessment, trauma care, hypothermia, heat injuries and more are taught. The course involves 16 hours of hands-on skill work and lectures.
Toys for Tots drive
AUSTINTOWN -- Dena's Nail Elegance, 5620 Mahoning Ave., will have its second annual Toys for Tots drive from 6 to 9 tonight. Toys for Tots is an event sponsored by the Marine Corps in which new toys are collected and distributed to children in need at Christmas. People who bring in a new unwrapped toy to Dena's during the event will receive a free service that evening and be eligible for product and gift certificate discounts.
Clinic sets open house
AUSTINTOWN -- The Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic will have an open house at its new Austintown Outpatient Center, 5211 Mahoning Ave., from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday.
Shenango toy drive
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Toys for needy children will be collected from Sunday through Dec. 2 at Maurices in Shenango Valley Mall. The toys will be given to the Salvation Army toy drive. Anyone bringing a new toy to Maurices will receive a 20-percent-off coupon for one regular-priced item in the store. K-B Toys in the mall will be another drop-off location.
