Variety show to benefit writing competition
Guest performers include a member of Boogieman Smash.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A variety show on the day after Thanksgiving will raise money and awareness for the Dom Leone Writing Competition.
This benefit, featuring musicians, entertainers and writers, will be in Ursuline High School's Deibel-Morley Art Center on Bryson Street.
The Dom Leone Writing Competition is held annually for pupils in the Youngstown public and parochial schools, and is coordinated by area authors and professors Carmen Leone and Teresa Leone. The competition is held in memory of Youngstown native Dom Leone, a published fiction writer, songwriter, poet and cartoonist, who died of cancer 17 years ago at age 29. Monetary awards and gift certificates are given to more than 40 pupil winners each year in the categories of poetry, short stories and cartoons.
This year's guest performers will include actress and singer Liz Rubino, who regularly performs on various stages in Youngstown and Cleveland; John Koury of Youngstown rock group The Infidels; and Rob Hudak of former Youngstown rock group Boogieman Smash.
There will be additional performances by Vince Leone and Sarah Mount of Cleveland; and Kevin Crofford, Marc Dottavio and Matt Pentello of Canton Central Catholic High School.
The show will also feature performances by returning favorites Jocko the Clown, the Finelli School of Dance, Youngstown guitar favorite Rocky Chirchiglia and The Spurs of the Moment. The annual silent auction will feature a wide variety of items donated by local businesses and individuals.
A donation of 3 for pupils and 5 for adults (children are free) is requested at the door. All proceeds from the evening will go toward the Dom Leone Writing Competition.
The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the performance will begin at 7 p.m. For more information, call Gina Leone at (330) 259-7428.
