UAW leary about Lear plans

LORDSTOWN — Will Lear Corp. close its plant in Lordstown in December as planned? Not if a local union can help it.

Officials from United Auto Workers Local 1112 were to meet Friday and Wednesday with officials from Lear, General Motors Corp. and the international UAW.

Jim Graham, president of UAW Local 1112, said union officials also are talking to an attorney about filing an injunction to prevent the plant closing, which is scheduled for Dec. 22.

Lear, a Michigan-based auto parts supplier, filed a 60-day plant closing notice in October. It attributed the closing to business conditions and said it is part of a company-wide restructuring that was announced a year ago.

Andrea Puchalsky, a Lear spokeswoman, said that she couldn’t comment on the continuing negotiations.

Graham maintains that the closing would violate an agreement reached early last year between the UAW, GM, Lear and another supplier, Intier Automotive Seating.
