Swimming/diving
CLEVELAND -- Julia Darling and Brittany Senn picked up overall victories and the Youngstown State swimming and diving team showed off its improved squad with a 157-74 victory over Cleveland State in a double dual Saturday.
The Penguins split two contests with the Vikings last season, edging CSU for a 118-116 victory before falling 130-97 in February. The 83-point margin today came with the help of six freshman swimmers and an extra year of experience for the rest of the roster.
YSU fell to perennial Horizon League power Wright State 163-80.
Darling also earned a win against Cleveland State in the 200 IM, and Senn was part of two winning relays against the Vikings. Olivia Arnold, Jessica Front, Erin-Michelle Gordon and Kelly Reese also picked up individual wins against Cleveland State.
Arnold added a personal-best time of 2:32.88 in the 200 breast to finish third overall, and Natasha Bray posted a personal-best mark of 2:21.47 in the 200 IM to finish seventh overall. It was Bray's sixth personal-best mark of the season.
The Penguins will compete at the Radford Invitational on Nov. 17.
Cross country
BOWLING GREEN -- Youngstown State senior cross country runners Marielle Glanz and Nick Kruse competed in their final collegiate meet Saturday at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Glanz was the top finisher for the women's squad, placing 123rd overall with a 6K time of 23:45.33. Kruse placed 150th with a 10K time of 34:44.13.
R.D. Goodright was the top finisher for the men's squad placing 140th with a personal-best 10K time of 34:33.56, and Justin Dickman finished three spots back in 34:37.30. Dan Nemergut finished 165th in 35:10.46, and J.D. Sheppard closed out the scorers with a 175th-place time of 35:36.27. The Penguins had just a 1:03 gap between its top and fifth scorer.
Freshman Lisa Lee finished 185th in 25:43.62 in her first regional meet, and Madelyn McGhee placed three spots back in 25:47.07. Jen Roman placed 190th in 25:52.47, and Amy Moore closed out the scoring five with a 197th-place time of 26:04.54.

Celebrity bartending
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Jeff Christian Charitable Foundation will have Celebrity Bartending event from 5-10 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Draught House, 219 W. Federal St., Youngstown.
Scheduled to be on hand will be Jeff Christian, Paul Esdale, Kelly Sickavish, Josh Reed, Brad Patterson and several other players.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Jeff Christian Charitable Foundation which among many things helps to purchase tickets and donate them to needy youth in the Mahoning Valley.

Curbstone Coaches
BOARDMAN -- Rocco Nero of the Ohio High School Athletic Association will be the guest speaker when the Curbstone Coaches Association meets at the Lockwood House on Monday at noon.
Nero, superintendent of Lowellville schools, is a member of the OHSAA's Northeast District Athletic Board.
Fred Vicarel awardgiven to Sferra
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown District Football Officials Association, is honoring long time official and current OHSAA District Secretary, Fred Vicarel.
A plaque in Vicarel's honor will be presented to a local association member each year, the plaque called Fred Vicarel, 'Respect the Game.' Bill Sferra is this year's recipient.
Vicarel officiated football 40 years, all around the state, which included the Massillon-Canton McKinley contest 20 years and the post-season playoffs 32 of his 33 years until his retirement in 1994.
He was appointed as Northeast District secretary in 1982 and has been responsible for some 6,000 high school officials in all sports, covering 14 counties.
Vicarel is known as an officials' official, assisting veteran officials, as well as working with young officials, observing them and watching them grow in officiating.
He remains as the only local official to have served on the OHSAA football rules committee and currently is a member of the Officials Hall of Fame committee, having been inducted into the Hall of Fame with the first class in 1989.
He also is a member of the East High School and Curbstone Coaches Halls of Fame and was recognized in 2004 by the Northeast Athletic Directors Association for his dedication to student-athletes.

NEW WATERFORD -- The Division 1 all-star team will take on the Division 2 all-stars in a Inter-Tri-County Volleyball match Tuesday at Crestview High School at 7 p.m.
Competing for the Div. 1 team will be Elyse Mongillo, Rachel Storm and Julie Simmons of Crestview, Britany Schrieber and Nora McKelvey of Springfield, Alex Ladd of Mineral Ridge, Darlene Woolf of United, Jackie Hatherill of Columbiana, Alyssa Donahey of Lisbon, Annie Semko of South Range and Sarah Stewart of East Palestine. Crestview's Alisha Auer is coach.
Playing for the Div. 2 squad will be Valerie Goerig and Emily Goerig of Leetonia, Krista Kiraly of Jackson-Milton, Emily ramsey and Paula Bergert of Southern, Jasmine Richardson and Kelsey Lyle of Wellsville, Lainey Kekic and Kaelyn Hrabak of Western Reserve, Tricia Eaton of Sebring and Rachel Mariotti of Lowellville. Coaching will be Dan McKinstry of Wellsville and Sue Prozy of Jackson-Milton.
Nick Johnson dinner
YOUNGSTOWN -- ESPN football analyst Paul Maguire will be the guest speaker when the 20th Nick Johnson Scholarship Dinner is held Dec. 5 at Mr. Anthony's banquet center.
Tickets are 75. Proceeds go toward the Nick Johnson fund that has raised over 500,000 in scholarship money for Ursuline students. For the 2006-07 school year, 24 individuals received a 500 scholarship in Nick Johnson's name.
