Man killed in crash
LISBON -- A Mechanicstown man died in a two-car accident Saturday morning, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Jason Bland, 30, of Blossom Road, died after he ran a stop sign on Valley Road in Butler Township and struck a car driven by William Ferguson of Salem, age not available, the patrol said. Ferguson was traveling west on Georgetown Road.
Bland was ejected from his car, the patrol said. Ferguson's car went off the road and hit a concrete drain and an embankment. Ferguson was taken by helicopter to Aultman Hospital in Canton, the patrol said. The hospital would not release information on his condition.
Seeking veterans
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer Memorial Day 500 has begun its search for three veterans to honor May 28, 2007, at the Memorial Parade and Observance. The selected veterans will ride in red, white and blue convertibles and be honored at the observance that follows the parade. A deceased veteran will also be honored for the first time during the parade with a black convertible.
This will be the fourth year that veterans have been selected for this special honor. Nomination forms can be taken directly from www.mercermemorialday500.homestead.com or can be obtained by writing to Mark and Linda Brown at 228 S. Erie St., Mercer, Pa. 16137. The deadline for entries is Feb. 1.
'Bird Feeders' program
ALLIANCE -- The John T. Huston-Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center will host a program called "Bird Feeders" from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 19. Registrants will get a chance to take a look at Ohio's resident winter birds and what they eat to get through the winter as well as build feeders to welcome these birds at home, too. Checking child car seats
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police will conduct two child safety-seat checkpoints this month. Police and Mercer Safe Kids will check child car seats from 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Mel Grata Chevrolet/Toyota Dealership, 2757 East State St., Hermitage. A second checkpoint will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at the New Castle City Fire Station, 10 Margaret St.
Patriotic meeting
SALEM -- The Salem Patriotic and Memorial Association will conduct a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Salem AMVETS, 750 S. Broadway St., to discuss 2007 programs, including the Salem fireworks display.
Womancare speaker
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Eileen McClure, MED, EDS, will present "Be the Light: Listening to Your Intuition" as part of the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon's Women of Womancare series from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 19. McClure is a graduate of the School of Spiritual Healing and Prophecy, Lilly Dale, N.Y. She holds diplomas in teaching, school counseling and school psychology from Kent State University.
