CHARDON -- Randy Greenwood rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns and Mentor Lake Catholic rolled up 438 yards offensively as it posted a 31-12 victory over Hubbard in a Division III Regional semifinal Saturday at Memorial field.
The loss ended Hubbard's (10-2) season, bringing a 10-game win streak to a halt. The Eagles lost their season opener to Maple Heights, 54-28.
Greenwood totaled 120 yards after halftime and credited his offensive line for his performance.
"I really want to give credit to the entire line, they made the holes for our backfield throughout the game and they did an excellent job."
Bayuk proud
Hubbard coach Jeff Bayuk noted, "The game was a lot closer than the score [indicated] and I am really proud of our kids. They played their hearts out tonight and never quit."
Trailing 14-0 at halftime, the Eagles needed just their opening series in the third period to get their initial points.
Hubbard moved 66 yards in six plays as Joel Younkins plunged a yard for the TD.
Quarterback Marc Kanetsky, who finished 17-of-30 for 199 yards passing, connected with Mike Carnahan for 32 yards and with John Bayuk for 19 yards during the drive.
John Shaffer made a 23-yard field goal to give the Cougars (9-4) a 17-6 lead early in the fourth period and Dave Jaranovic tallied on an 18-yard run to make it 24-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles drove to the Cougar 26-yard line and Kanetsky threw what appeared to be a TD to Mike Maietta, but the officials ruled that he fumbled prior to entering the end zone and the Cougars took over on their own 20, wresting any momentum away from the Eagles.
"I didn't have a good enough angle to see what happened on that catch and I would rather not comment on that play right now," said Jeff Bayuk.
High-catch total
John Bayuk caught six of Kanetsky's passes for a game-high 70 yards.
Mike Bell, coach of Lake Catholic said, "Give Hubbard credit, their offensive line gave their quarterback plenty of protection and he was able to make some things happen in the second half."
In the first half, the Cougars' Greenwood scored twice on runs of 9 and 11 yards, while the Cougars' stingy defense limited Hubbard to 97 total yards.
In the fourth quarter, Maietta caught a 10-pass from Kanetsky to make it 24-12. Greenwood found the end zone for the third time, this time from 32 yards out with 1:58 remaining to seal the victory.
Mentor Lake Catholic finished with 420 yards rushing and Jaranovic had 155 on 16 attempts.
Steve Cinicola led the Eagles with 46 yards on 14 carries.
