NEWTON FALLS -- One passenger was killed and another seriously injured when a sport utility vehicle overturned Monday on state Route 5 near state Route 534 in Newton Township.
Tolbert Chism, 83, of Youngstown, was pronounced dead at Trumbull Memorial Hospital after being taken there after the 6:30 p.m. accident.
He had been a front-seat passenger and was not wearing a safety belt, according to the Warren post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Another passenger, Madonna Pinkard, 41, of Cortland, was life-flighted to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she was in guarded condition late Monday. The OSHP said Pinkard also was not wearing a seat belt.
Chism and Pinkard were ejected from the vehicle.
The driver, Russell Pinkard, 38, of Cortland, received minor injuries and was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital, as were two children who were rear-seat passengers and wearing seat belts.
Russell Pinkard was driving eastbound on Route 5 when the vehicle went left of center. He overcorrected and then the vehicle overturned, landing on its roof, the OSHP said.
