SCLERODERMA
Facts
One in every five Americans suffers from an auto-immune disease in which a person's own immune system attacks itself. Scleroderma is one of these illnesses.
Scleroderma is a chronic, often progressive, auto-immune disease similar to multiple sclerosis and lupus. It affects more than 300,000 Americans and 12,000 Ohioans.
Can cause skin and organ hardening, severe and debilitating joint pain, swelling, acute reflux, respiratory and pulmonary failure and can be life-threatening.
There is no cure . In fact, diagnosis is often difficult because so little is known about this disease and its exact cause.
