MILL CREEK PARK June calendar Activities planned this month at Mill Creek MetroParks' facilities:



June 3: 10 a.m.-2 p.m., the MetroParks Police hosts this annual fishing event at Yellow Creek Park in Struthers. Officers and volunteers will offer games, raffles, prizes and more. Bring a fishing pole and your favorite bait and join us for a fun-filled day.
June 3: 10 a.m.-noon, park personnel will cover the basics of kayaking and then take a short trip on the waters of Lake Newport. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch. Participants need to complete a waiver. Reservations must be made 36 hours before the program. Call Ford Nature Center (330) 740-7107 for details. Fee: $12 per person (resident), $15 per person (nonresident); second person in tandem kayak, half-price.
June 4: 2 p.m. See some of the lesser-known residents of the MetroParks Farm in Canfield -- draft horses, rheas, guinea fowl and peacocks. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway trailhead at MetroParks Farm. Easy rating, two miles.
June 6, 14, 20 and 28: Health and wellness walks Tuesdays, 6 p.m. and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. June 6, meet at Ford Nature Center. Moderate difficulty, four miles; June 14, meet at MetroParks Bikeway trailhead at MetroParks Farm. Moderate difficulty, two to four miles; June 20, meet at MetroParks Bikeway trailhead at Kirk Road, Austintown, moderate difficulty, two or four miles; June 28, meet at Yellow Creek Park Office, Struthers, moderate difficulty with hills and steps, one, two or three miles.
YOGA: June 1 (morning only), 3, 6, 8, 13,15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 27 and 29: Reduce stress and relax while learning the basics of energizing yoga movements taught by Heidi Suraci. Classes at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Tuesdays, 5:30-7 p.m.; Thursdays, 8:30-10 a.m. and 5:30-7 p.m.; and Saturdays, 8:30-10 a.m. Call FRG at (330) 740-7116 for information. Fee: $9 per class.
June 6: 5:30-8 p.m.: Lynn Cardwell will help students construct a "green man" wall mask and will share the related garden folklore. The clay project will be glazed, fired and ready for pickup after June 27. Call FRG to register. Fee: $30 R, $39 NR.
June 7: 6:30-8:30 p.m.: Receive instructions on how to grow heirloom tomatoes. Take home five unusual heirlooms. Call FRG to register. Fee: $15 R; $20 NR.
June 8: 10, 10:45 and 11:30 a.m.: Two-year-olds and their favorite adults will learn about frogs. Explore a frog's life through a story, song and creative play. See tadpoles in different stages of development. Call FNC to register.
June 9 or 10: 11 a.m.-noon or 1-2 p.m., June 9, or 11 a.m.- noon, June 10: Each preschooler with their favorite adult will plant a pail of colorful petunias to bloom in the summer sun. Meet in the Family Garden to plant, listen to a story and enjoy a snack. Call FRG to register. Fee: $8 R, $11 NR
June 10-11: Ikebana Flower Show. The beauty and gracefulness of Japanese flower arrangements are presented in modern as well as traditional environments. Shows times, noon-5 p.m. June 10 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 11. Call FRG for more information.
June 11: 2 p.m.: Bring your bike for this ride to Western Reserve Road and back. Along the way we'll watch for wildflowers. Helmets are required. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway trailhead at Kirk Road. Moderate difficulty, 12 miles.
June 11: 2- 3:30 p.m.: A leisurely walk in Fellows Riverside Gardens to admire the peonies and roses. A guide will point out highlights while sharing anecdotes and history. Sign in at the information desk on the afternoon of the tour.
June 12-15, 19-22 or 26-29: Junior golf camp at the par 3 golf course from either 8:30-10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.-noon, for ages 7-18. The four-day sessions will cover basic instruction and course etiquette. Call the par 3 course to register. Fee: $30 R; $40 NR.
June 15: 6:30- 8:30 p.m.: Cutting and grooming entries for the Rose Show on June 24 will be demonstrated at this meeting of the Mahoning Valley Rose Society at FRG.
June 16: 8:30-10 a.m.: Start your morning with a brisk garden walk. Return to the Garden Cafe to enjoy a light breakfast and learn more about the bellflower family. Call FRG to register. Fee: $6 R, $8 NR
June 16 or 17: 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. June 16 or 10 a.m. June 17: Preschoolers ages 3-5 with their parents or guardians will learn about turtles through a story, craft and activities. We'll take a stroll near the Lily Pond to look for sunbathing turtles. Preregister at FNC. Meet at Birch Hill Cabin. Fee: $2 R, $3 NR.
June 17: 2-4 p.m.: An afternoon paddle on Lake Newport to observe the early summer flora and fauna of Newport Wetlands. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.
June 17: 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.: Members of Fifth United States Colored Troops re-enactment group will provide an afternoon of enjoyment and education at Lanterman's Mill. Learn about the important role black soldiers played in the Civil War from knowledgeable historians. See re-enactor Steffon Jones as he portrays an 1860s USCT officer at 1 and 3 p.m.
June 17-18: Summer garden show presented by Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown. Shows open from noon-5 p.m. June 17 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 18. Call FRG for more information.
June 18: 2 p.m.: Father's Day hike, and learn about the lives of animal "pops" in our area. Meet at FNC. Moderate difficulty, 2.5 miles.
June 21: 8:30 p.m.: The brisk-paced solstice hike will allow participants to stretch their legs and lungs. Meet at Stavich Bicycle Trail at the end of east Liberty Street in Lowellville. Moderate difficulty due to length and hill, four miles.
June 21: 8:26-10 a.m.: Solstice kayak trip on Lake Glacier. Meet at Lake Glacier Boating Center.
June 23: 7-9 p.m.: Take advantage of the extra hours of daylight and explore scenic Lake Newport. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.
June 24: 10 a.m.-noon, enjoy a cool morning excursion on the park's largest lake. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.
June 24: 1:30-3 p.m.: Children ages 6 and up with their adult companions will learn about miniature roses and how to tend them in the garden. We will plant roses in the Family Garden and look at the miniature entries in the Rose Show. Each child will receive a plant to take home. Call FRG to register. Fee: $7 R, $10 NR.
June 24-25: Mahoning Valley Rose Society Show. Entries from novice and experienced growers will highlight this American Rose Society affiliated show. Shows times, noon-5 p.m. June 24 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 25. Call FRG for more information.
June 25: 2 p.m.: Geocaching combines the satellite technology of a global positioning system with a love of the outdoors. Guest presenter Kyle Neuhaus will help participants locate a previously hidden cache using a GPS unit. Call Ford Nature Center for details and reservations by June 22.

June 9-July 30: Mill Creek and Beyond-Photographs of American Landscapes, Weller Gallery. Compare the dramatic views of Mill Creek Park with western landscapes as viewed through the cameras of local photographers Pat and John Hyland.
June-August: H.W.S. Cleveland, landscape architect,
Melnick Museum. This prominent Midwest landscape architect hired by Volney Rogers was influential in the early design of the park's East Cohasset Ramble and the Lily Pond.
METROPARKS SUMMER ADVENTURES
Kinder critters (for children entering kindergarten): Activities are planned for indoors and outdoors along with a story time and crafts in July and August. Campers will go on short walks to learn about nature. Registration and fee due at Ford Nature Center by June 22 for the July 6-7 session at the nature center and July 18 for the Aug. 1-2 session at Yellow Creek Park, Struthers. Fee: $25 R, $30 NR.
Park Pals (for children entering grades 1-3): Become a Park Pal and learn about Mill Creek Park and the plants and animals that call it home. Each day will be filled with hikes, crafts, games and fun activities. Enroll for both sessions for maximum fun (new activities are planned for Session II). Registration and fee due at Ford Nature Center by June 13 for Session I on June 27-28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and June 28 for Session II on July 12-13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fee: $30 R, $35 NR
Park Explorers (for children entering fourth through sixth grades): Explore the diversity of Mill Creek Park during these two-day adventure sessions. Learn about the plants, animals and history of the park through hikes, games, crafts and more. Enroll for both sessions for maximum fun (new activities are planned for Session II). Registration and fee due at Ford Nature Center by June 15 for Session I on June 29-30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and July 5 for Session II on July 19-20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fee: $30 R, $35 NR.
