YSU BASEBALL
Tournament notes
Pomp and circumstance: Thursday's loss ends the collegiate careers of 10 YSU seniors who led the program to 104 victories and its first NCAA Tournament berth (2004). Justin Banks finished his career as YSU's all-time leader in games played, doubles and total bases, and Brandon Caipen finished as the all-time leader in at-bats.
School record: YSU's 12 hits against Cleveland State brought its season total to a school-record 592. That mark eclipses the 2001 squad's total of 585.
Swept: This year's tournament was the first since the 2002 tourney where the Penguins failed to win a game. They picked up their first postseason win in 2003 with an opening-round victory over Butler, won four games in 2004 and defeated UW-Milwaukee in their first game last season. The Penguins are just 1-4 in the Horizon League Tournament in the past two years.
Finale: Thursday's solid performance against Cleveland State was nothing new for Eric Shaffer. The senior from Akron closed out his career with a record of 4-0 and an ERA of 1.28 in six starts against the Vikings.
