BREAKING TIES: Sometimes government has to make decisions when voters can't. This week, the Mahoning County Board of Elections had to break ties in nine Republican precinct committee races -- with the flip of a coin.
Board member Michael Morley used the traditional right-hand flip-and-catch, turn-over, reverse-on-the-left-palm technique rather than the Magic 8-Ball double shake. (For the record, heads won 5-4.)
The results meant defeat once again for Robert Korchnak, a failed 2005 Youngstown mayoral candidate who also lost a Youngstown school board race in 2001. He and Lori Greenwalt had each gotten two votes in Youngstown Precinct 7E.
Mary V. Sharpe, a board of elections employee, lost her coin flip in Boardman Precinct 40 to Gregory S. Beule. They each had 4 votes. Her daughter-in-law, Mary E.M. Sharpe, lost her coin flip in Struthers Precinct 1D to William Holby Jr.
