Koval KO'din third round
NEW YORK -- Austintown boxer Chris Koval was knocked out in the third round of Wednesday's fight against 273-pound Shannon Briggs.
In the first round, Briggs (47-4-1, 40 KOs) connected with a left hook to the head followed by a left hook to the body.
In the second round, Koval (23-3, 18 KOs) showed he could take some decent shots.
Koval threw a solid left-right in the third round, but a right uppercut by Briggs badly hurt Koval. A right-right uppercut combo put Koval down again shortly afterwards and the fight ended.
Canfield's McGowanpicks Duquesne
PITTSBURGH -- Canfield High's Rachel McGowan will continue her tennis career with Duquesne University.
McGowan led Canfield to an undefeated season in 2005 and a Top 10 team ranking in Ohio's Division I poll in all four years she played varsity. McGowan and Renee Lesnet were Ohio's doubles state champion.
McGowan had a 94-21 record in singles and 23-1 in doubles.
A four-year all-Metro Athletic Conference player, she was an all-state selection in 2004 and 2005. Nationally ranked in the USTA college recruiting list, she went 8-9 in tournament play in the USTA National Opens.

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown SteelHounds have hired Heather Sahli as the director of client services and Beth Starrett as account executive.
Also, Steve Reynolds has been promoted to senior account executive.
Sahli has worked for five years with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, holding positions of an account executive, director of ticket management and most recently director of client services. The Struthers native is a graduate of Struthers High School and the University of Toledo.
Starrett has been a corporate sales intern for the Cleveland Cavaliers and is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace.
Reynolds is the longest tenured SteelHound, joining the team at its inception as an intern while graduating from Youngstown State. The Canfield native attended Canfield High and is attending Kent working toward his MBA.

CANFIELD -- Canfield High football coach Mike Pavlansky says four of his players from the 2005 Division II state runner-up team have made college choices.
Quarterback/defensive back Frank Ross will attend John Carroll University to play on offense. A three-year letterwinner, Ross was a first-team all-Metro Athletic Conference player last fall. His parents are Jack and Barb Ross.
Wide receiver/safety Tommy Hudson will attend Waynesburg State. A two-year letterwinner, he also returned kicks and was all-MAC honorable mention. His parents are John and Annie Hudson.
Also attending Waynesburg State will be defensive lineman Ryan Pitzer, a first-team all-MAC and Northeast Ohio selection. Last year, he was all-state honorable mention. A two-year letterwinner, he is the son of Jay and Lori Pitzer.
Defensive back Damon Buente will attend Baldwin-Wallace College. A three-year letter winner, he started two years and was a second team all-MAC selection. His parents are Vic and Lynnae Buente.

Boardman winsFederal game
CANTON -- Mallory Hay socked a two-run triple as the Boardman High softball team defeated Canton GlenOak, 9-6.
Jaclyn Cunningham followed Hay's hit with a run-scoring single as the Spartans rallied for three runs in the top of the 10th inning to snap a 6-6 tie in a Federal League softball game.
Hay also added three singles to finish with four hits while Justine Cullen had three singles and two RBIs and Samantha Peters two singles and one RBI to aid the Spartans (10-12, 3-10 FL).
Nicole Williams got the mound win in relief.
Brittany Russell had three singles and one RBI for GlenOak (9-18, 6-7 FL).
