Police seize boxes of movies after firefighters put out blaze at home

CAMPBELL -- Police seized boxes of movies, which they suspect may be part of a film-bootlegging operation, from a Bright Avenue home.
An off-duty Campbell police officer -- who is also a Coitsville volunteer firefighter -- saw the materials when he responded to a fire Wednesday afternoon at the home.
No information was available Wednesday night from Campbell police. Firefighters said the off-duty police officer found the movies -- including some currently showing in theaters -- in plain view as he and other firefighters searched for the cause of the fire.
Firefighters were called to 15 Bright Ave. around 3 p.m. Wednesday and took about an hour to extinguish a fire in an upstairs bedroom. Then they stood by as police removed the videos from the home.
Firefighters estimated loss at $5,000 and said the fire was contained to the bedroom, and appears to have started behind a dresser.
A man and woman and two children, age 13 and 8, live in the rental property owned by Bill Young of Cortland.
After talking to neighbors, firefighters said they feared the man, whose car was in the driveway, was asleep in the burning house. Before they forced the front door open, however, the female occupant of the house arrived with keys. She told firefighters the children were at school and the man was at work.
